  • Hello and Advice on 2009 Kakadu Purchase Please

    Hello All,

I am a new member and have attempted to read many of your posts on 150 series truck and in particular any posts about 2009 Kakadus.

I think now I am more confused than when I star

I have been looking to purchase a Prado for some time and now that I am getting close (I have a few options) I would appreciate some advice.

Firstly, Diesel v Petrol - I understand that this is an age-old debate and that there a pros/ cons for both however I wonder what resale will be like of a petrol in say 5 years time? I started out looking at diesel trucks however the power and smooth ride of a petrol is a nice option.

I am looking at a vehicle with around 120,000 - 130,000km so in 5 years time I think the mileage would be around 190,000km... Petrol trucks are cheaper now (and have no turbo issues etc) however petrol would cost around $1100 more per year to run. Is 190,000km in a diesel worth say $10,000 more than a petrol in 5 years time?

I don't tow a lot at this stage so that doesn't really factor into my thinking yet... I also currently drive a diesel sedan so don't have any issues with diesel cars from a power, handling and feel perspective.

I would appreciate any advice on re-sale value and people's experience and thoughts.

The second question I am debating is CRAWL v The Advanced Safety Pack... I enjoy 4WDing and have done so in my previous 4WDs however the wife unfortunately doesn't share my passion and apart from a few trips to Double Island, Fraser and maybe a few country campgrounds we won't be doing much actual real 4WDing.

Based on limited difficult driving and a young family the Advanced Safety Pack would be a better option. However, do people generally want the CRAWL pack from a resale perspective? The Safety Pack was a $2,500 extra when it came out but seems like a bit of a gimmick? Does anyone have advice on this please?

In terms of Kakadu v GXL - I really like the leather, sunroof and all the gear etc. I started looking at GXLs but jumped in a Kakadu and really liked the feel - so at this stage a GXL is not really where I am thinking.

So, in summary I have two options with about 120,000 - 130,000km on the clock:

    1. A 2009 Diesel Kakadu with Advanced Safety Pack (no CRAWL), bull bar, tow bar, UHF etc.
    2. A 2009 Petrol Kakadu with CRAWL with no extras.

The petrol is cheaper but not by much really. Both are in great condition and everything works...

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

I have a 2010 Diesel Kakadu with the Crawl (i.e. without the extra safety bits) - only option is a factory ali roobar and tow-bar. If i was to buy again - I'd certainly go the petrol for sure. The Diesel engine has inherent issues (mainly injectors and some Exhausts gases causing oil blockages) where as the Petrol engine is extremely reliable it seems. Having piece of mind to me is much better than less fuel consumption. Each to their own but piece of mind goes a long way. If you follow the 150 Diesel engine sub forum here you may see that the issues seem to begin around the 120-k mark or thereabouts for the Diesels (some much earlier). So any fuel savings (vs the Petrol) over the years may be lost as you've invested in some new injectors ($2k-$3k) or a new engine block ($9-15K due to a burnt piston caused by faulty injector).

I use my Prado mainly on the beach, the odd bush camping spot, and towing different stuff (dinghy, boat, jetski, trailer) around and this is where it shines so a roo-bar and winch and all that 'offroad' stuff is not warranted (for me). Even the stock tyres are great on the sand as they don't rip up the sand. Though my car came with a factory front bar - I wouldn't have cared much if it didn't. As for the Crawl function - I haven't even used it - it's a little bit of a gimmick for my use. I'm not into mountain or rock climbing or any of that stuff. Where I live we have very soft beach sand and the Prado doesn't miss a beat in even regular AWD mode. I simply always let my tyres right down (12psi) and I have never been stuck in 20+ years.

I drive a Diesel Prado GXL at work and the Kakadu is quite a (big) step up - the exterior is hardly different but the interior is quite a jump up. I personally think the stock Kaka's suspension is the bees nees. I also like the rear DVD for kids and the 4 surrounding cameras. The front camera is 180 degree looking. I always reverse park in a carpark and the front camera is great for looking for oncoming traffic.

What did you think them both?. Have you driven both to compare?. All I can say - forgot about number crunching and just go with what makes you happy when you drive them. You won't regret it in the long run.

    Hope that helps.

      Thanks MacroP,
I think the petrol is a nicer drive and the what you are saying makes perfect sense - I will basically be using it in the same way as you.
I will jump on the 150 Diesel Sub Forum and have a look - as I didn't think a Toyota would have inherent issues and that is certainly food for thought!
I know what you are saying about not number crunching but after owning a Beamer, Disco and Pajero - let's just say I have been burnt... I should have bought a Prado years ago!
      Thanks again.

        Hi,

I was in the same situation as you 6 months back. I was driving a toyota camry that recently clocked 200k and prompted me to look for a replacement. Owning a prado has been a long time dream for me and i was intially looking at GXL model primarily due to financial reason...when i started looking around, visiting dealers on weekends, i came across the Kakadu model and with just curiousity, i started to see what features the kakadu have and was very very impressed...started researching about it and became even more excited to own one...Finally after many weekends of going around dealerships after dealerships, i finally decided on a Petrol Crystal pearl Kakadu with 105k...it has the off-road pack (CRAWL control, electronic locking rear differential, MTS and MTM)....

Even though this prado would be mainly a family mover car, I still chose the off-road pack than the ASP....having the ASP pack would forfeit CRAWL control, electronic locking rear differential, MTS and one of the MTM cameras (driver side). Although i have no real plans to go really hard core off-roadiing but knowing that those features are there gives me peace of mind.

I would say go with what will make you happy....test drive and do check everything, features (if you can), accessories e.g. bluetooth headsets x 3, 1 x remote for the rear entertainment, 2 x remote key (this is importatnt as the remote key is very expensive around $400). Also do check the DVD player if all functions are working...mine had an issue with the DVD/CD player although it was sorted out by the dealership at no cost to me...

Goodluck and do let us know how you go...

        cheers

Thanks Arien - that sounds very familiar. I agree with you about the Crawl v ASP.
I have just read all a lot of the D4Detontation issues and quite frankly am alarmed and paranoid - I thought Toyota Diesels were the definition of reliability! And with a second hand dealer car there would be little to no recourse (unless it happened within the statutory 3 month period which would be unlikely).
I went through all the systems on the petrol truck on the weekend but I still need to check that the CD/ DVD player works. I will be getting a RACQ inspection also.
Thanks for your input - I don't suppose you could PM with a ballpark figure of what you agreed to pay - just to check my price?!
          Cheers,
          NP
