  • New Spark plugs and spark plug wires

I went to Repco today to try and get new spark plugs and wires. I was hoping to get Ngk platinum 1X Iridium plugs (which were good from my research ) and the NGK Blue premium wires (just to be consistant). Unfortunately, I was told that for my 1999 3.4L VZJ95 Prado, I can only use the owner's manual recommend KB-11 use Ngk's BKR5EKB-11 standard plugs (which have twin electrodes ) and Ngk's standard wires. I did not make the purchase until i can get further advice from fellow members since i am willing to spend more for better performance parts to rectify the unburnt exhaust smell problem (as outlined in my earlier post ).

I remember when i was searching for a used Prado 3 years ago, I have seen a few 1999, 2000 models using the Ngk blue premium spark plug wires.

Any advice or comments please. Thanks

I currently have NGK Iridium IX (BKR5EIX) spark plugs in mine and it seems fine. Pretty sure I actually got recommended them from someone on here.

As to the cables, I'm not sure. I should probably replace mine but haven't yet.

I don't believe I really benefit from the iridium plugs in any way... i just forget to change plugs so put them in instead.

            Hi Ranj,

just like to share some info with you. I e-mailed customer service of NGK here in Perth about using BKR5EIX-11 instead of the manual recommended BKR5EKB-11, they replied that "äs the EIX is only projected 3.5 mm into the combustion chamber, whereas EKR is projected 6.3 mm into combustion chamber, we do not recommend this as misfire may occur which would cause your car to run erratically . If we thought it could be used, we would list it as an option for your vehicle ".

In order not to go into further debate, I did not reply them that i actually saw the EIX listed as an option in the NGK parts book showed to me by my mechanic.

Since you you did not experience benefit from the Iridium plugs, to prevent further delays, I have decided to install the already bought EKB's and the Champion Heavy Duty Inductive core ignition leads, both purchased from Repco.
