  • Prado 150 low range won't engage

Just had a call from a mate with a 2010 manual 150 GX who is out camping and is having problems with high and low range engaging.

Symptoms are that he can only drive it with the range selector in low range but the car is actually in high range. If he switches to high range there is a continuous beeping alarm.

The VSC is also off so it seems that the car thinks it is in low range but it hasn't actually engaged.

Any ideas on what this might be, he needs low range to get his camper out from the camping spot.

Edit: obd2 check shows no alarm.

How does he engage the low range? The car needs to be in neutral and you need to give it a couple of seconds before it engages. If you do the switch while in drive, you get the beeping alarm you mention.

My mate has been using it on sand several times a week for over 4 years to go surfing so he has a pretty good understanding of how to use it. This is a technical problem, something isn't working.

        No damage around the actuator??

Not really sure what would cause it, just taking a stab in the dark but I would be checking out the actuator and associated wiring down there.

Make sure the vehicle is in neutral stopped and clutch all the way in. Have had people not pushing the clutch all the way in and having this problem. It has to detect the clutch switch like when you start the engine.

I think similar has been written about before from memory it involved some selector pins in the
transfer box apparently there are some engagement pins similar to those on a syncromesh brake and they aren't very robust, forcing the the shift lever can either dislodge or bend them making shifting impossible.

Ask your friend if he forced the shifter recently?

150, no lever to force, just a nice little electric knob to turn.

I think you turn that and a little man climbs under your car and selects low, like the guy that turns the light on in the fridge

Then check plugs etc for water ingress

Last message I got was that a local mechanic looked at it and the decision was made to drive to nearest Toyota Service centre with alarm beeping. It was drivable in H4 just an alarm beeping as described above. Not sure how he got the camper out, probably lots of herbs in H4 as it is very sandy.

Will post the final outcome when I hear.

Turns out that the actuator motor on the transfer case had failed. $2400 just for the replacement part.

was it damaged or did it just fail?

It failed and no warranty. Not sure what you mean by damage it as it will only engage when in neutral.

About 90k but 4WD gets a lot of use, at least weekly.
