  • Good 12V Ignition / Constant source in dash area?

Having finished the mechanics 101 on the Prado GX I'm now taking a newbie look at the electrical side of things.

I have installed a new distribution box with 5 fused relays 30A and additional 5 fused wires in the engine bay and routed the switch and constant power cables cables to the center console. Now, what are good/easy access points for 12V ignition on and 12V constant power sources to switch the relays?

If the fuse panel behind the dash has some empty slots, use a multimeter and probe them. Then use a permanent marker of different colours to mark those that come on with accessories, with ignition, or permanent.

Then add something like this blade fuse wire tap

Or if there are no blank spots available you can use this instead

      Sounds good. Will do.

Make sure that while you are probing the fuse terminals that you mark the side of the source power because it and the fuse adapter have a "polarity".

If you look at the image below, on the Slot 27 diagram, the left hand blade is the power source.

Right. Does that mean if the fuse adapter goes in the wrong way the current doesn't go through the fuse itself and the rest of the circuit remains unfused?

Not quite. It means that all of the current must flow through the first fuse before going to the second fuse.

Picked up some Wire Tap Mini Blade Fuses from Jaycar today and looked at the dash fuse box labels.

To minimize my time crouching under the gas pedal I thought I choose a suitable fuse before attacking it further.
All spare sockets have constant 12V so that is sorted. Now I'm looking for an 'ignition on' spot out of the existing fuses labelled:

              Amps Label
              10 Door
              25 Door D
              25 Door RR
              (Spare)
              25 S/Roof
              30 WIP
              20 Washer
              10 Cooling
              10 IGN
              7.5 Gauge
              7.5 Panel
              10 Tail
              7.5 OBD
              7.5 A/C
              7.5 AMI
              25 Door RL
              (Spare)
              7.5 ECU-IG No.1
              7.5 IG 1
              10 ECU-IG No.2
              (Spare)
              20 S/HTR FR
              30 P/Seat FR
              30 Door P
              15 P/Outlet
              7.5 ACC
              10 BKUP LP
              10 Towing BKUP
              20 AVS
              10 KDSS
              20 4WD
              30 P/Seat FL
              25 D/L NO.2
              (Spare)
              30 PSB
              15 TI&TE
              10 Fog FR

Fog FR and S/Roof appear to be good choices as my GX doesn't have fog lights or a sun roof. Do these come on with the ignition or are there better sockets?

My sunroof only works with ignition. There is a delay where the power to the sunroof stays on after the ignition is off. Or it will turn off as soon as the driver's door is opened.

Sunroof should be sufficient. Had hope that D/L NO.2 would mean driving lights but it obviously relates to the power door lock system.

Hi FoxPro how did you get around the tightness of the driver side fuse box? With a wire tap going I can't see how I can get the fuse box cover back on. Any tips?

Hi Terry T, I'm installing a dual USB that I bought from Lightforce in Adelaide. It has the fuse tap set up which I've connected in to the KDSS spot. Have just left the 10 amp KDSS fuse out coz its not doing anything in my Prado.

Yep, you can't get the fuse cover back on.

I have a mate that owns a 4wd wreckers yard and got a cover from a wrecked Prado that I am going to cut out so the fuse tap will fit. A bit agricultural but the only way you can get the cover back on.

Then off to the chiropractor after fitting the bloody thing, but works well.

Thanks for the quick response Piratepete. That sounds like the only option and a good one too. Think I'll be doing exactly that. Btw so did a bit of probing and found that the S/Roof fuse seems to be constant 12v....different to what was mentioned in the previous post that it only comes on with Ign. Did u find the same?

Hi Terry, my Altitude has the sun roof so I could have used it if I installed the fuse tap & reinserted the sunroof fuse but I chose to use a redundant fuse space which for me was the KDSS. Probably a bit over cautious but I have extended warranty & don't want to give Toyota any chance to blame me if the sun roof plays up. Decided to get the cover from wreckers so that I could keep the original in case I decide to remove the USB for resale in the future.

I'm looking to do something like this myself only for a dash cam. I'm also trying to work out which socket to use for constant power and which for switched. As I have a 2014 GXL I know for sure the KDSS isn't being used (10A), and I presume this is a switched port. I'm interested from what
foxpro said about the spare slots all being constant. I don't have a multimeter to check myself but will try one of those ports with the dash cam and see how that goes. I've no idea what amperage the dash cam needs and the online docs don't state it either, which is kinda odd I thought. Anyway with regards to the wire taps, someone linked to https://www.jaycar.com.au/double-min...e-tap/p/SF5125 and I'm wondering if these are indeed the right type to get that'll fit the fuse box under the drivers side? The fuses look really small in the box and I haven't yet removed one to see how long the blades are and if it'll match what's shown in that link. Anyone with any advice here?

                            Cheers!

Just pull one of the fuses out and compare it to this diagram to see what sort of fuse tap you need
My 2017 has low profile mini fuses or sometimes called micro fuses
Last time I checked Jaycar did not stock the low profile mini fuse taps but they are pretty cheap on ebay
