  • Back winch Permanently mounted back winch

    Hello there, fellow Prado owners

Has anybody permanent mounted back winch?
Thinking about doing some extreme four-wheel driving in a remote places solo, and thinking about getting a back winch installed, as at some situations that might be handier then a front one.

I would be interested if anybody has done it, and if so how.

    Thank you

yeah a bracket like that, along with a receiver at the front of the car would be handy. could swap from front to back when necessary.

Looks interesting, however, you would have to carry it around on board, and when stranded put it on, could be bit of a problem, especially in mud and rivers, and if you have to get out quickly, not to mention could be difficult putting it in (and if driving with it, departure angle is pretty much limited)

Cheaper to get a friend to tag along. Make sure the friend has a missus that can talk to your missus and leave you in peace to have a beer with your mate when the driving is over for the day.

No reason why you can't leave it bolted onto the hitch. You would need a good towbar that bolts to the chassis rails and cross member.

Having it permanently attached might stuff the exit angle/clearance on those wild tracks.

Well this is only a plan, a distant project, but I am starting to do research and advanced planning. Siberia, namely Road of Bones and BAM Highway, and 110 winter track. So far it is just a wishful thinking, but it has been for the past 30 years on the back of my mind to do it one day, and time is running out. Time frame around 2019-2020. In the meantime I have to get some practice doing High country and a trip to Cape. Just dreaming at the moment, but it keeps me going :-). And most of the things that I have dreamed up in the past I have done eventually. (Started learning Russian already :-))

By the way Andrew, is there a chance that, that rear bar of yours can be adapted for the back winch?

I replied in the bar thread already, but basically I would say no. But given where you are planning on going you will probably want 2 spares

Sounds like an awesome trip, I presume you have seen the series the long way round with Ewen McGregor and Charley Boorman? It certainly looks from their experience like it would be an awesome trip.

I would start out by measuring the gap between the rear crossmember and the fuel tank to ascertain if a winch would fit in the gap. Assuming it would physically fit I cant see any reason you couldn't fabricate something to make it useable.

                        Cheers Andrew

They do say everything you bring should have at least two uses.

                            Thanks for the reply.
I have seen quite a few videos and reports, I believe, they only did the road of bones, not the BAM, and definitely not teh 110km winter road. As I said it is bit of a dream, but I want to take it to reality. Yes I will definitely need two spares (if not three). When I travelled around with my modified VW around Bolivia, I had three flats within 500km, and then again nothing for 2000 km.

I will do some more searching an researching --- that is where the fun begins :-).

I know someone that has something similar on his 80 Series.

He has installed a front tow-bar hitch received into the bull bar and run a 150amp anderson to the front and rear hitches.
Them its just a matter of dragging the winch to the front or rear, plug it in and off he goes.

Dunno that I'd want to have a 30kg+ chunk of steel floating around in the cabin, even if it was behind a cargo barrier...
                              Cheers
