  • New Toyota Prado in June 2015

Just read this on Car Sales and thought I would share. .

Surprise Prado upgrade emerges as missing piece in Toyota Australia's 2015 new product promise
Toyota Australia will launch an upgraded Prado in August, motoring.com.au has learned.

It's unclear exactly what changes the 2015 Prado will bring less than two years after it received a major midlife makeover in November 2013, but we understand it will be subject to a similar 'tech change' earmarked for the larger 200 Series LandCruiser by year's end.

After the dramas with the D4D engine and the fact they chose to underrate the tow capacity to keep 200 series sales going Toyota really need to pull something out of the hat. The Ford Ranger has proven a hit for Ford and the Everest based on the same platform but with a 5 link rear suspension package and a 3 tonne tow rating will give Toyota a real challenge. I have a 150 v6 2009 and it has been a good vehicle as it has been used as a tourer and for serious 4wdriving, but... I don't believe that it the same quality as the 90 series that I had for 13 years and used for the same purpose.

Toyota needs to think about there core strength and revisit there previous reputation as a premium brand. If they don't then they will be left behind, which in my profession as marketing manager, brand loyalty will replaced with price. C'mon Toyota lift your game to where it was and then improve.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

There's a new 2.8TD for the new Hilux in a few months so I suspect that engine may filter up to the Prado update (engine, trans, and tech). The new donk is 132kW and 450/420Nm in Hilux guise with 6AT/6MT transmissions. I guess the 6 speed slusher will follow as well. Maybe a few ponies more for the Prado hopefully. The Fortuner (think Hilux Surf) is coming too potentially and I wonder how that will fit in?

The current tech inside a Prado is being blitzed by Jeep at the moment with regards to the electronic safety systems. These bits need to made available to the lower end models not just restrict them to the upper models. At the end of the day people want gizmos and safety. The Kinetic suspension and diff locks can be left to the enthusiasts.

        Rant over.

I can confirm the Prado will get the 2.8TD. I ordered a new GX Prado last month with delivery expected in August, and the dealer mentioned it would have that motor.

That's interesting as Toyota have had a policy of not confirming changes until the official announcement in October.

Unusual that until now theres has been next to no reports of testing, spy shots etc given the expected release is so soon.

The updates maybe under the bonnet only so the test mules probably look like every other face-lifted Prado on the road. Can't see them doing a major body update just yet. The current shell has a few years left at least potentially. If the powertrain, interior, and the tech get an update than that's all that is really needed.

Thats a possibility I guess but why not in the facelift (given it was so recent) or wait a bit to release the facelift. Time will tell I guess.

The facelift was nearly two years ago now so perhaps the engine wasn't ready then and I don't see a facelift coming for the 150 only a new model in 2-4 years time. In the interim there maybe a diesel (and transmission) update coming - the 2.8TD with 6 speed auto - but time will tell as you say. I wonder if the V6 will be scrapped too. It doesn't look like it will make it to the new Hilux arriving soon.

Also note - The 1KD diesel wasn't put into Hilux and Prado here until 2005/06 where as the engine was released in Japan in 1999/2000 from memory in the Surf long before the release of the 120 Prado in 2003. I think the 1KD is past it 'used by date' and Toyota may not want to wait until the next model arrives. Similar to the midcycle change the 120 Prado had from 1KZ to 1KD.

I'd tend to agree, but with the lifetime of previous models taken into account it is about time for a major body update:

                          90 series was '96 to '02 - 6 years.
                          120 series was '02 to '09 - 7 years.
150 series is '09 to today - currently 6 years.

Of interest, the rumours are out that there is a new Lexus GX coming out late this year. Considering the GX is the Prado equivalent in China and the U.S. it may indeed be the case the the update is more than just an engine change.

Talking to someone I know at Toyota they have been told the new Hilux will be here mid August and definatly a 2.8 2nd gen D4D.......it's meant to have about the same KW's as the current but more NM's of torque and possibly bi-turbo.
No news on the Prado though.
