  • AIRCON CUTTING OUT OVER 100km/h- 08 Prado GXL 6spd Man

    Hi,
    First time posting!
    I like in the East Kimberley, WA.
    I have recently purchased a second hand 2008 Toyota Prado GXL (1KD-FTV), 6spd Manual, prior to having it shipped up north I had it completely checked out by RAC and my mechanic in Perth who primarily deals with Toyota 4x4's.

    Upon picking it up in Broome, I drove it home and about 20km out of town, the aircon started to cut in and out, intermittently blowing warm and ice cold air. I was doing about 110km/h at the time, and when I dropped down to 100km/h the aircon would immediately kick back in.
    It was about 34 degrees Celsius at the time but the engine temp was well below 50% on the dial.

    Later on in the drive, when the sun went down and it dropped to 24 degrees, the aircon would work better regardless of the speed.

    I had a similar problem with my previous 2003 Hilux 3.0Td 5spd Man, but the aircon in that would cut out due to overheating and the engine temp would run at 85-90% at 110km/h. My mate up here has the exact same model Prado but automatic, and he says he can do over 110km/h at anytime of the day, at any outdoor temp and the aircon blows icey cold all the time!

    Can anybody offer any insight into this issue or knows what's wrong? I'd love to be able to finally do the speed limit during the day, with a functioning aircon....

    It's fitted with 2x spotties, lightbar, steel bullbar, roofrack, dual batteries, 2" lift, and awning.

    Does the condenser feel very hot at the times it has cut out?

    If it has been over gassed it will cause it to cut out.
    Also make sure your radiator & condenser are clean, it's hard to see the kilograms of crud that can be hidden in there.
    The stops the cooling & eventually cuts out the compressor.

      I didn't look or feel the compressor during the drive, but I will next time!
      Ok i will give those a look over when I next take it for a spin!

        Yeah, it'll be an airflow issue causing it.
        Either the condenser will be externally blocked, or blocked between the condenser & radiator causing excessive a/c head pressure & it activates a pressure switch to turn the compressor off to save doing damage.

        It'll need a good cleanout, but if it has a heap of grass seeds in it, you may have to move it completely.

          Ok great, I took it to the local aircon specialists in town. They said it was a gassing issue, so they dumped the gas and re-gassed it, initially worked for the first 10km, but again it has cut out and continues to do so over 100km/h.
          I'll have to take it back and will get them to clean out the radiator/condenser and everything in between, hopefully that helps.

            And make sure they replace the dessicant bag/filter in the condenser - they have a tendency to block.
            Having said that, by law they should be replacing it anyway - you have to when you regas a car.

            It wont be a refrigerant issue, if it was you would be getting the same issue regardless of car speed.

            Other thing is too, check your fan clutch is engaging, because sometimes if they are on the way out they can disengage at higher revs which wouldn't help the cause.
            That is, I gather the 1kd has a fan clutch, I got a V6. lol

            And ALWAYS make sure they are regassing your car with R134a. It costs more, but its what your a/c system is designed to run on.
            All these new blends are cheaper, but they are extremely harsh on components designed to run on R134a - especially compressors.

              Other than the above the ecu will turn off the aircon when engine temp exceeds a preset level. No idea where this sensor is. This maybe why it works after the heat of day is gone.
