  • Trip Advice Cairns to The Cape

Reaching out for some advice from experienced PP's for a novice (me) going on a mates 40th B'day road trip from late Sept, starting from Cairns and heading to the Cape, with the following places in between: Daintree, Creb Track, Lions Den, Cook Town, Laura, Musgrave, Archer River, Morten Telegraph Station, Bramwell, and Old Telegraph Track to the top with "anything else we can find in between".

This trip wasn't on the radar and I have been gradually building up my stock 150 VX Diesel for trip like this well into the future for when I had more experience (and equipment) under my belt.

So I am after any recommendations to add to my shopping list for (and any spares I should carry) the minimum requirements to have the VX prepared for the mentioned places being visited.

Thanking you in advance, this is what I have so far:

    4WD Course
    47L Fridge
    Auxiliary Battery
    Recovery Kit
    Air Compressor
    Diff Breathers?
    Under body Protection?
2013 MY14 VX Prado TD, Bullbar, Airtec Snorkel, Uniden UH8080NB, Tyredog TPMS 1400AX, ScangaugeII, Interior LEDs, Creed 9' LED Spotties.

Don't look at me, I'm Gen X, we are stuck in the middle of all this....

Decent mud/AT tyres would be first on my list. I see you already have the snorkel.

Also I would recommend the Frenchmans track for your itinerary. We did it SouthEast to North West, but either way is fun.

Beer, I see you have left beer off your list, and I'm sure you will need a few cold ones!!!

Other than that you will be fine

P.S. Did I mention you will probably want to take beer??

I wouldn't even bother with under body protection , or even AT tyres . Been there done that . I'd just drive your standard vehicle on all those roads . Don't waste your money on anything other than a fridge that will hold enough booze . Because you can only buy mid strength beer in certain places and if it takes too long to get from Mulgrave station to bamaga , you will run out of decent booze . That's your biggest problem . The cape is NOT the great 4wd eating adventure that it was 10 -15 years ago . In a prado it's a walk in the park , unless your a complete moron . You'll enjoy it . Cheers

Pass Kav another beer say yes Kav in soothing patronising tones! , but... this is your excuse to get the gear you want! Get the 2" lift and play tyres, they will come in handy after the cape!

I have seen standard sprung Prados bottom out on some of the rocky river crossings up there and some crossings can be deep so every inch counts. Creb Track is well known to be lethal in rain so in my opinion tyres are a must. You can get rain on that section any time of year. Yes a standard Prado set of tyres will do if you want to be recovered by a Pootroll and limit yourself to the bypass tracks on the telly track and only in dry weather and go on the tar all the way to Cooktown and skip out the Creb.

The other thing for your list would be a river crossing blind or "bra" September will probably be good weather further up the cape but not impossible to get a rain dump too.

If you have limited time and your mate has experience then you should be able to learn on the job and skip the 4WD course. If his ability is in question too, then, ignore this.

If you can afford the time don't rush up and back, no joy in long days doing nothing but drive, so much to stop see and enjoy.

Depending where you are going there can be grog restrictions in many communities up the cape with heavy penalties so check it all out to save a huge waste of money.

Lastly get the top NRMA roadside cover, saves carrying a heap of unnecessary spares and tools although I expect you will need neither in the VX.

Thanks guys, great advice very much appreciated.
I am thinking to change tyres for the trip, I have found the Grand Treks slippery on wet muddy surfaces (that was in the 120 not sure if will be the same in the VX - I am doing some easy tracks from Baccas Marsh to Blackwood this weekend to see how they handle). I was thinking about Bridgestone duellers when the Grand Treks wore out - happy to take on-board your suggestions tho in particular this trip as many of you have been through there. My mate is experienced and there will be others with their 4wd or 2wd vehicles as well, not sure of their levels of experience but I am looking forward to learning on the job. We are heading off on the 20/9 and returning on of after the 4/10. No idea on how this is timed in with the locations.

The shopping list has been updated:

            Beer
            47L Fridge
            More Beer

Put tyres & lift on the list.

I think your list is pretty well covered...we went up in Sept 2014 and I took spare belts, hoses and air filter...Didnt need any of them, except the air filter which I replaced once back on the tarmac...This was my first 4wd trip, in my first 4wd vehicle...Lifted, Cooper AT3's, snorkel and aux battery...The Prado did it easy...

If you get time, take a look at our trip blog/vehicle stats... https://rifftotip.wordpress.com/

Anyone who has Vrilya Pt on their itinerary this year, please be aware that this area is closed for the 2015 Dry season.

The one spare I don't leave home without and I go up the cape 2 to 3 times per year and fix cars for a job is a spare fuel filter
