  • Pedders foam filled trakryder

Has anyone had experience with Pedders Suspension for a lift kit? I am looking for a lift kit around 30-40mm mainly due for towing a boat and road stability. Pedders have 2 types of shocks available either gas or foam. They say that the foam is better as it prevents the need for airbags. I have no idea if this is true. I don't see anyone using Pedders on this site and just want to know if the quality would be as good as something like OME? I have been quoted $1650 which stacks up against OME but will it be as good?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Stick with Pedders for your Commodore, fit OME for your Prado

Sorry, cannot agree with the other guys. I wouldn't fit Pedders to anything. Stick with the usual suspects for your 4wd.

Nuff said... Go OME, Dobinsons or Bilsteins...

Lots of opinions here but very little evidence as too why to assist OP in making a decision based on fact?

Why not buy yellow ones instead of red ones??

Interesting comment and it got me thinking. My aversion to Pedders comes from first hand experience on a couple of cars luckily at others cost and not mine. It is hard to rationalise buying what should be a performance upgrade to find that the product performs at a level below that of the stock parts.

I don't think that my Prado needs anything other that what is offered by the usual players in the market, TJM, ARB, Toughdog, Billies etc. I run TJM on the 150 and I am really happy with it. The cost of the Pedders stuff as noted above will get you into any of these.

It also dawns on me that the purchase price for the four shocks and springs on my 150 including fitting is less than I spent on a mountain bike fork and shock...

Perhaps we should get Jason to start a thread about basic shock design and what the terminology means. For example the foam cell is simply a lump of foam in the shock which changes volume when the shock and oil gets hot. The idea being to prevent foaming which reduces the shock performance. Better than an oil filled shock but in my experience not as good as a gas pressurised shock which used N2 under pressure to do the same thing. And then you can go for a remote unit to aid cooling and bigger diameter for strength and also to aid cooling and so on.

I still maintain that the best value for money is with those who do 4wds as their core business.

After seeing the dogs breakfast that Pedders have made on lots of cars Ive been involved in, I know why I wouldn't trust them to even look at a vehicle.

Why don't you ask Pedder's what shocks they run on their 4wd race vehicles and off/onroad race cars? I can assure you they don't sell them...

Thanks for this. I wont rush in and will have a chat at the 4wd shops about OME and TJM. I just dont want a full 2 inch lift due to height of car with Bike racks on the roof as well it may not allow me to fit into the garage. Maybe just do Airbags for towing and nothing more.

Most if not all the major 4wd guys do different lifts. Have a talk to them and send a pm to Jason at Wholesale (site sponsor) or ask #############. I like airbags.

I don't know about pedders foam cell but from 2 friends experiences with this mob I would have a look at other brands as well . I would suggest talking to a couple of suspension shops about what you want and your options in making this happen. After a few issues and I lot of research I have more of an idea what I would want second time around . When I bought my lift I new buggar all about suspension and trusted a reputable brand and explained what I wanted to achieve in height with certain weight . Sometimes a salesman looking at a computer to tell you what you need may not be the best solution IMO but rather someone who installs suspension all day everyday and can offer you a number of solutions depending on your requirements

I would suggest also talking to a suspension shop about what is needed to support your needs regarding your intended use and there may (and will be) many ways to skin the same cat with their product lines as different springs/shocks/air bags will give you different outcomes for empty/loaded/towing setups.

I can reply with fact on the Pedders Foam Cell's for Prado's and let you know that the Front foam cell that Pedders sell is actually a rear shocks designed for another vehicle that Pedders slip a Pedders only spring seat over to turn it into a coilover. Then they make a Pedders only unique front spring to fit it. It is not interchangeable with anyone elses parts, which makes sourcing parts in the middle of nowhere a joy & it is very undervalved for the front of a Prado.

                            Regards, Jason.

Maybe they weren't the foam cells, but I have fitted a set of Pedders front struts to a 120 Prado and used the original spring without an issue, they were just like any other strut.

I only fitted them to remove my OME suspension when I traded my first Prado so cant comment on their performance.

                              Cheers Andrew
