Inspired by those creative souls on youtube who used standard downpipe as their 4wd snorkel I wanted to do something similar for an Ipad mount.
The parameters where: Cheap, removable, available, firm fixture for offroad.
As I wanted a big 10.5" screen a window mount was out question. No window screen would be left to look through.
After inspection of the center console the double din console box of the Prado GX came into focus. Deinstallation of the unit revelaed it's oblong internal space. The idea of creating a 'plug' was born. Some careful measurements of the internal dimensions (about 150x150x73mm) pointed to a similar sized cedar piece in the shed. An offcut of a roofing beam. Sawing and fine tuning with a belt sander shaped the plug. And it just worked out perfectly. Once shoved into the box it was hard to persuade the thing to come out again.
Timber screws followed to secure a RAM mount to the timber plug.
Attached are some photos of this 2 hours effort.
A fast test ride over the local speed bumps was successful. No movement whatsover.
The whole plug and arm mount is removed as quickly as one can pull it out of the console. Visibility while driving is good. The arm allows for exact positioning. The unit is a Samsung Tab S 10.5 with GPS and phone function. Being paired with the stock radio it allows for hands free calling. Internet and all other Android apps are also available.
Now for some beers. Yeaha.
