Still waiting to hear back re the original issue. Spoke to the Diesel place in Cairns this morning who are testing the injectors and was told they are all running a little low but none are worse than the other, as I was initially informed no.4 injector was cactus. Injectors running a little low isn't going to stop my rig in its tracks! This is very concerning as I'm now thinking the injectors weren't the issue in the 1st place, and because the diagnostic tool has come back with an error, the mechanic has put it down to injectors when there's another, potentially major issue and all the while, we've been sitting here, for a week and a half, being patient and for nothing!

I'd love to speak to any mechanically minded PP members who could possibly shed some light on what this could be. PM your mob and ill call you back.
    Cheers
    Michael

Alrighty. Finally got to the bottom of my engine issues. No.4 piston to cactus! Big crack right through the middle. Cylinder okay. EGR choked up to buggery. Expensive lesson to learn but that's life! Now just waiting on parts

Bought it second hand in 2010 with 85,000 on the clock. Suffered the dreaded rattle and had all injectors changed in 2011. Had a second fuel filter installed by Berrima Diesel a while back and 5 weeks ago, put the car into Toyota for that Injector seat recall. Now, the rig has run faultlessly until yesterday afternoon, whilst ascending probably the steepest hill on the Bloomfield track (between Cape Trib and Cooktown), with about 150mtrs to the top, I began to lose power, revs and it stalled. Not a great situation to be in, being stuck on a pretty serious incline and reversing wasn't an option with our new Patriot Camper in tow. Luckily I managed to turn it over, and with low range, managed to find the grunt to climb the hill and coast down the other side, where we came to rest until rescued by RACQ some 3 hours later- 15kms south of Wujal Wujal. Just waiting to hear back to see if I've done any further damage. Fingers crossed!

        Regards
        Michael
From this post it sounded like the usual cracked piston.
The part I was not sure of is why a comp test was ok?
        That's why I asked. Bugger!!!

That soot is a real KILLER of the 1kd. This s why I think people are crazy if they understand how big the egr problem is & don't act on it.
Did Toyo check your injectors when they did the seats?

But the soot didn't kill the piston did it? More likely old style (pre 316) injectors fitted in 2011 with the same sheet issues too.

Mechanic told me comp tests don't always tell the story. Oil may have sealed and hidden fault during a light comp test. No, injectors weren't inspected during seat replacement, I mistakenly thought they would have but was informed it's not part of the recall process. Not sure whether or not a blocked EGR was a main contributor but certainly would have helped it along. I hear many blank their EGRs off?

It's contributing factors, add over fuelling & blocked injector nozzles can send the fuel in a bad spray pattern, concentration it in one area.
Hot spots on pistons. Tow = more fuel.

2011 should not have old sheets, in my terminology injector seat/washers.

So you can remove the over fuelling, with fresh injectors.
You can remove or highly reduce the soot, with egr bank plate.
                Pistons can be made stronger.
                Also don't tow lol.........

So the 2.8 engine coming soon is the same engine but with thicker pistons thus the reduced capacity because of the added meat.

My mate owns a 2012 Kakadu with 45,000ks.

Recently his car has been making a noisy rattling noise on idle, it doesnt get much quieter once the engine is warm.
If he raises the revs, it goes away but as soon as the car goes back to idle it comes back..

Is this a injector related problem?

                        Likely.

                        Maybe not.

Get it plugged Into a scan tool ASAP.

Ive told him a few horror stories so hes booked it in at toyota for tomorrow. Ill keep you all updated with what they say.

He was also saying that every now and then while hes driving he can hear a crackling noise. Very strange

Think I may have figured a probable cause with my piston failure. I recently had a performance chip installed but no exhaust upgrade. The higher fuel delivery (fuel/air mixture) has caused a higher exhaust gas temperature and the standard manifold is too restrictive to handle it. The excess temps have cause the damage I reckon. I'll disconnect the chip until I have an exhaust fitted

I think there is the answer to your problem, exhaust upgrade or not!
