  • Running power cables to the back of the car

Hey, just wondering how people have run power cables to the back of the car...

I need to run power from the isolator/dcdc charger in the engine bay to a portable battery box in the boot...

I also need to run a power cable to the tow bar.

Have you guys run the cables under the car, in the car or...?

    Thanks in advance.

I ran mine from the engine bay to the back in 25mm corrugated conduit and fixed it to the chassis rail using saddles. It was a pretty easy job, the hardest bit was feeding the cable through 4+ mtrs of corro

I ran mine through a grommet in the firewall, then behind the kick panel and under the plastic on the door sills.

loads of threads on here about this if you use Google search.
In a V6 2014 Prado I was able to run the cable through the left hand chassis rail.

If you use 6B&S, you won't need the DC-DC charger. Run the twin core through the grommet in the passenger's side firewall and through the kick panel. Then have a junction box somewhere in the boot and then run from the junction box through another grommet near the jack compartment to the towbar.

If you do want to run the DC-DC charger, then it should be at the back next to the aux battery.

Hey, just as a matter of interest what
size bolts did you use to saddle to the chassis? Did you use the standard galv saddles for the 25mm conduit? Cheers.

It is much easier to run the cable to the boot as described above.
Run from battery across the front of the engine bat under the cover in front of the radiator.
Then through the grommet in the fire wall on the passengers side.
Tip here you can cut one of the nipples of the grommet and push a raw wire through then pull a string through to attache to you cable.
Taper the end of the cable by cutting one core about 50mm shorter ties the sting on and tape the end up so you now have a tapered end.
Lube the cable with detergent / car wash etc.. and put it though.
One you have it inside put it under the scuff panels.

Inside the car will offer much better protection.

I run mine inside the car, much better protection and if you spend the time thinking, planning and going about it carefully then you can get it pretty neat.
