  • Urgent Please: Repercussions of Using Different Tyre Sizes

    Hi,
    First time poster.
I've just purchased a 97 Prado. It currently has Kuhmo highway 235/70R/16 tyres on it. The 2 on the front are almost bald.

I have the opportunity to purchase 4 Dunlop AT standard tyres which are 225/70R/17C from a Toyota HiLux 4x4.
I'm wondering about the repercussions of putting these tyres on our car and if they look any good due to the different rim.
As you would know different size tyres can cause damage to the diffs etc.

Any advice would be appreciated. A quick reply would be truly appreciated before I miss out on these tyres.

    Thank you.

    You can't mount 17" tyres on a 16" rim.

Thank you. We're buying the rims as well. Sorry for not mentioning that.

As long as all the tyre's are matching size, you'll have no issue's. I would chase up a spare tyre as well. Otherwise you'll be stuffed if you get a flat. Unsure of the off set the Lux has compaired to your Prado. I'm guessing she's a RV model with tyre's that size.
96 3.4 GXL, 2" lift, Poly airs in rear, 32" BFG muddies, Lightforce 170's HID's, TJM rack, Awning, Twine on board shower, GME uhf, Dual batteries & monitor, Storage system, ARB fridge, LED rear lighting, Safari snorkel, Brown Davis bash plate, Ironman winch bar, Runva 11xp winch, Roadsafe recovery points, ARB compressor, Tyre dog monitor, AJ's sliders, Hema hn6. The to do list is getting shorter.

The 17 inch tyre has a diameter 12mm larger than the 16inch tyre , so the vehicle will get a lift of 6mm .
There might be a small increase in fuel going to a larger tyre

Google 'tyre size calculator' to check yourself

Unless he Dunlop AT are in very good condition and you are buying cheaply, I don't see the benefit in making the change.

Check rolling diamter of both tyres as to make sure your speed doesn't go out

Also need to make sure the load rating on the tyre is enough for the Prado.

THe prado obviously weighs a little more than the Lux

Check the rim offset between the two rims also, it's illegal to reduce overall wheel track and you can only increase by 50mm I think.

Eg; if the existing Prado rim has a offset of +25 and the hilux is +30 it would be illegal as the overall track width would be reduced by 10mm (5mm each wheel)
If the hilux has a rim offset of 20mm it would be fine as the overall wheel track would increase by 10mm.
It's important to get this right as it can give the insurance company an out in a claim if it's found the vehicle has an illegal modification

You want a rim that is the same or slightly less than you have

From my calculation's you're going from a 29" tyre to a 29.4' tyre. With the right off set rim there will be no issue's, Most people are running 32" tyre's on a 2" lifted on here. I run 265/75/16 (32") on the STD GXL rim with no scrubbing at all. I've have tried a number of different GPS system's checking the speedo. And she is now spot on the money. IMHO go for it.

If changing all 4 there will be NO diff damage. If you had to run a single different sized tyre for a short time its also ok on the 90, as long as the transfer is not locked.

Ultimate consideration - 17's will fit and be better on road but 16" tyres will be slightly cheaper to replace and better off road.

If concerned about legalities remember it's illegal to reduce tyre width beyond what's stamped in your drivers doorway.
