  • Brake Fault or not

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, not sure if it’s a Toyota fault or built in with the clever computer.

When driving along a flat road at 100km per hour, with your left foot, just apply a little pressure on the brake pedal just enough for the brake lights to come on. The taco jumps up heaps and the vehicle slows down.

I first notice it when my trailer electric brake unit was playing up, by hitting the panic button at 100ks and keeping the car at the same speed you could feel the car slow and the taco jumps up 500 revs or more. when there was no trailer attached to the car

My Prado is 2012 build, 4L diesel with 57,000km on the clock.

I need someone to try this with their Prado to see if the is a problem with mine is or if it is built into the clever computer. I would ask the local Toyota dealer but I don’t trust them. (they don’t even service it)

    Cheers John.

Is it the torque converter unlocking?

With the brake switch the auto will also start engine breaking, or at least that's what I'm lead to beleive. This could be what you're experiencing.

Sounds like the same thing that happens going down hill, you touch the brake and it drops down a gear to help slow you down. Perfectly normal.

        Cheers Andrew

Yes, good point. I need someone else to try it with their Prado just to see if it is a common problem.

                yep all normal.
MY14 TD auto should be much the same.
first thing that happens when you touch the brake the torque converter unlocks = revs go up
It will also change down a gear but not always, speed and brake force or duration seems to determine what it will do.
Going down a hill it will change down as well, maybe this is the duration of the braking that tells it to change down.

                Funny how you found it.
I had a similar thing intermittent fault with the electric brakes
Turned out to be a loose connection in the wire going to the brake magnets.

                Hope that helps

                  Thanks heaps Guys,

Sounds like its all normal, i knew about the down hill changing gears after touching the brake but didn't associate with the torque converter unlocking.

                  thanks again.

I'm interested in how you have a 4L diesel? Probably confuses the dealer too and that's why you don't trust him.

Now I'm shattered. I always thought it was a 4L. Thanks for putting me straight. it tows well for a 3L.
