  • Brake squeal

    Hey guys,

I'm getting a bit off brake squeal from my front left (I think) just as I come to a stop under light brake pressure - just what you use in normal peak hour traffic.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an easy fix? (other than paying someone to take a look!)

    Cheers, Andrew.

56000km, there is still plenty in the pads. Front would have about 8-10mm of meat in them so I dont think its the wear indicator.

I remember years ago fixing this in another car by applying a paste to the rear of the pad, assume this is still an option but was thinking there may be other ways.

The squeal is normally just a light vibration between the pad and the backing plate and or caliper. You're on the money with the paste, I use CRC Disk Brake Quiet but I have also used copper grease in the past as well. http://www.crcindustries.com.au/disc-brake-quiet

Simply remove the pad and backing plate and put a bit of paste between the two surfaces, wait a few minutes and re install.

It could also be a bit of glazing on the disc, I have had that issue a couple of times. Roughing the disc a bit with some fine sandpaper helps or just make a conscious effort to brake a lot harder a few times and that also works sometimes.

          Cheers Andrew

With the way you describe your braking light pressure in traffic I agree glazing could be the issue if you are doing this every day
in the industry I work in deglazing brakes is /was always the first thing to do if brakes are squealing. (haven't been on the tools for a while)

Chamfering the edge of the pad normally gets rid of it. Also some times you'll come across a dodgy mechanic or home mechanic who don't bither to put the anti squeal shims back in.... Cheers Steve

Has anyone replaced discs with DBAs yet?

I have had the same issue, same wheel, from new on my 120. Toyota would not warrant a fix surprise. Their fix was to bond the pad on preventing the vibration. Great fun when it comes time to change pads.

I have used disc non squeak spray, roughing the discs and applying more pressure on the pedal and they all work for a short time.

Learned to live with it and pumping the pedal lightly when its happening usually stops it. Still bloody annoying.

As an update I went to apply a anti squeal product to the brake pads on the weekend - it was similar to the CRC product mentioned above. Instruction wasn't very clear and I couldn't work out if the stuff went between the pad and the anti squeal shim or on the back of the anti squeal shim to the piston... any help??

Putting it between the pad and the shim would seem to almost ruin the shim. Are these replaced with the pads?

I did work over the front disks with some 80 grit paper in an attempt to deglaze them and also deglazed the pads and put a champher on the leading edge of the pads however I don't think this has had much effect, the squeal is still there in the same instances. Any tips on deglazing??

It goes between the pad and the shim and also the shim and the caliper.

No luck yet on getting this fixed. I dropped it off to Toyota yesterday for the 60,000km service and asked them to fix it. Picked the car up and they said "don't worry about it - there is plenty left in the pads"..... So I squeaked my way out of the dealership fuming.

Has anyone had their disks machined and can give me an approximate cost to have it done along with new pads? Suggestions on pads?

Happy to do the pads swap myself as they are easy to get out but haven't looked at getting the disks off, I assume this requires you to remove the brake calliper? Has anyone done it themselves?

Toyota want the car for another day and $330 for new pads and a skim off the disks.

Remove the wheel, 2 bolts to remove the calliper and then the disk should just slip off, easy as! The rear discs can sometimes be a bit harder due to the handbrake.

                          Cheers Andrew
