  • Navman "My 4WD Tracks" ...any good?

I have been looking at the 4WD track, map upgrade for my new Navman MY600LMT.

It is only $35, but I wondered whether anyone here has used it and had any comment as to how useful it is.

We are off on a trip in March, so I am trying to get set up for what ever challenges are thrown at me. We will be driving around Fraser Island so I am guessing these maps might be pretty handy......Thoughts?

Don't waste your money. On my MY85XLT they just come up as lines on a blank background, no topo information. It appears you have to call up the track manually by name using the search function too. I ended up getting an iPad with HEMA maps, much more useful.

^ That's about right. The maps show up just like any other road on the GPS. You turn on 4WD tracks and they appear. The only plus is that you can then navigate on these remote tracks. You often need to select the "Shortest Route" to get the GPS to route through the 4WD tracks as it assumes they are very slow and avoids them.

But no, there is no other information with them. It does show some campsites though, if you search for them.

Well that's 2 against and 0 for, the Navman maps.

I am guessing that any guidance is better than none, but I am interested in the Hema app on iTunes.

What I am unable to work out, however, is what do you get for your $99 download? There seems to be additional Topographical maps that are about $120, per State or Territory. Are these required as well??

I've not been to Fraser Island before so I don't know what to expect as far as getting around the island, finding landmarks etc...

What I do know is a guy I play Soccer with made it around the place in a 2WD Hyundai IX35, so I'm not expecting too much of a challenge, but I am guessing that there are places you need to navigate, to find?

          Rubbish

          make that 3 - 0
Anything that uses proper maps will cost more.
you get what you pay for.

You get a lot for your money, we use the Hema 4wd app almost exclusively nowadays and find it excellent. We have never felt the need to get the more detailed topo maps, the extensive range of maps that come with the app will get you pretty much wherever you want to go.

            Cheers Andrew

I bought the Navman My-escape III and yes it doesn't give you all the details of Hema but to be honest i only want to know I'm where i want to be, as for topographical maps they are great but IMO you drive until you cant and stop, i will be honest i have downloaded all the Hema gear onto my phone but only because it gives you coordinates of places which you can use in the Navman.

navman maps are crap , had them on an old gps ,

now using hema on android $29.99 at the moment from play store, easy to use , record tracks, plot routes and download other peoples routes from hema cloud. also found it way easier to use than oziexplorer

Personally I prefer using the rooftop paper maps, i know these only get updated every few years or so but so do the GPS maps.

my maps sit in the glove box and i pull them out when needed, when its quiet at work i can fold it down so it fits within my diary and study some other tracks too.

I've got enough distractions with the kids and SWMBO in the car so to have 1 less voice telling me what to do " make a U-turn when possible" and bugging me whilst on the tracks means I'm a happier boy.

Pros and Cons to everything though i guess

I ended up just buying the maps on the Navman. I had a Navman, discount code and I ran out of time to sort out Hema maps on the wifes iPad.

there really wasnt a time that I needed to use the "MY 4WD Tracks" app on the trip, but it was nice to know it was there if i did get hopelessly lost.

The down side of this experience was that during the map upgrade and 4WD tracks purchase, I somehow got some corrupted software, and lost all my safety camera info. i didnt notice this until we were underway, on our 4 week road trip

I called into The Good Guys at Coffs Harbour, to try and sort the problem out (after Navman's phone support couldnt help) and in the end, had to resign myself to the idea that I wasnt going to get any warnings about speed cameras for the rest of the trip

Back home now and have been through all of the software recovery process from Navman, to no avail, so the unit went to their repair place this morning - I only got it in December

My Navman isn't even detected by the PC anymore so I can no longer update the maps. Even when it did work the map update process was very flakey, not real impressed after spending around $300 on it.

I've always used Garmins and I've finally found a Garmin GPS unit that did exactly what I wanted and I've recently updated my Topo Maps on it for $40, luv it..... I tried using my mates iPad that had both HEMA and Mudmaps loaded onto it and for me that only advantage was the larger screen, I felt that the Garmin Montana 650T was far better and more flexible for what I like doing.... bigger screen would be nice but I'm use it and it doesn't bother me.....

Maybe I need to spend some more time with the HEMA system but for what I saw, I will be sticking to my Garmin until I can get someone to teach/show me how to use one properly and then I'd make my mind up...... but until then, I'll stick to Garmin....
