  • 5 days at Fraser

We went up to Fraser over the extended Oz day weekend with the 4wd club . 4 cars plus ourselves with the camper left on Thurs 22nd and John came the next day on low tide with his caravan. We all met at the shell servo at Nudgee at 6am to travel in convoy. We arrived at inskip around 10am. I found out on the way up we would be crossing at high tide and this one was aparrently a king tide. All the cars were waiting to run the gauntlet to the barge which was a good 150m dash. After airing down to 16 I went for it and only just made it as the last 40m was through 2ft of water with a very soft bottom. Somehow we maintained just enough momentum to make it on being the second last vehicle to fit on.(just as well cause there was no turning back. Drove the inland track and as soon as we got back onto the beach down came the rain. Stopped for a quick pie at the shops at Eurong and then drove on to find a campsite about 2km past the Maheno wreck. That first arvo wasn't much fun as the rain was heavy by this stage and relentless. Setting up camp wasn't much fun.

The prados stuck together at camp too

Friday the weather was a lot better with only a few showers so we drove up towards Indian head and went for a swim in the Champagne pools. No chance of losing my 2 in their high vis.

Drove up to waddy point for a look and a group shot
We drove to Orchid Beach, stopped at the shop for an ice block then headed back stopping for a quick look at the coloured sands on the way , then a swim in the chilly freshwater of Eli creek before thunder chased us back to camp for dinner.

Saturday we decided to go see Lake Mackenzie. on the way we stopped and did the short walk to the lookout over Lake Wabby .The trip leader that day was Robbie who was then anointed Wabby for the rest of the drive.

Lake Mackenzie was spectacular the crystal clear freshwater was soooo nice to swim in and the kids and most of us swam for hours. Definitely one of my highlights.

After a swim , we drove across to Kingfisher resort to the bar and restaurant for a beer and a steak before a walk along the jetty at dusk.

We ended up leaving around 8pm and did the night drive back to camp which took about 75 mins

    5 days at Fraser

On Sunday it was a scorching 36 degrees so first we were off to Eli for a couple of floats downstream before we set off on a drive to see what was over at Moon point so we turned off at happy valley and headed in land . Its amazing the dense rainforest not so far from the beach and these massive trees that are rooted in sand. no wonder it was popular for logging. the road we took to moon point was blocked by fallen trees so we doubled back and stopped at lake boomerang which looked good from the road however not so for swimming cause it was full of grass and reeds and we figured this was why it was called boomerang cause as soon as you head down you will come straight back. We talked to some rangers in the carpark who said thee trees were not cleared from the track because of a large hole in the track that people kept chucking logs in to try and cross and kept getting stuck. Then took a drive to Lake Hallam and had lunch in the rainforest before going for a swim in the tea tree lake. no one was in the water when we went down an there were about a dozen turtles popping their heads out of the water.

headed back to Eli for a bath on the way back to camp.

How rude , all these backpackers were blocking our view

    And the prados shot
Also had to get a photo of the "pirate ship" for the girls

    the prado shot on exit

I forgot to mention on Saturday we passed through central station .This was impressive and the sheer size of the trees and rainforest was amazing. We went for the walk down to Wangoolba creek which was awesome because the water is so clear that it is hard to see it is flowing.

We had to stop and give way to some light aircraft on the beach as well which was a bit weird as the runways changed position depending on the tides. always keep an eye on the kids cause lone dingoes would sniff about during the day and would always be about after you turn in at night.

On Monday we packed up in sunshine, stopped for another swim in Eli creek then made our dash along the beach to beat high tide. Unfortunately couldn't make it past hook point but doubled back a couple of hundred metres and found a track leading up to the in land track and in 10 mins were waiting for the ferry. Awesome weekend was had by all . Friends ,family, 4wding and camping, doesn't get much better than that. Total kms 1000 ,450 of them on the beach. Only scratched the surface and cant wait to get back.
    Cheers Matt

Looks like a great trip except for the wet start. It certainly turned out to be great weekend weather wise.
Good advise re the dingo's too. Sneaky buggers. I don't trust em and they are getting worse as each generation gets used to humans more and more.
You didn't end up doing the Valley of Giants?

That's a fair drive to Kingfisher for dinner.
How was driving in the dark along the tracks? I've never done night 4wding.

Was good fun cause I wasn't leading. Night time didn't slow these guys down though. I hung back just far enough to use the light bar which helped heaps. My first time night driving, I usually try not to but I enjoyed it

Fantastic trip, we missed out on doing Fraser when we lived over there, although we did manage a trip up Tewantin and that was brilliant enough, truly blessed for scenery over there. Hoping to get there this year with a mate from the Sunshine Coast in his Jeep. Still on the list of places to go with the Prado, but a bit far to travel from WA
