  • LED's Tail light & Signals

    Hi there,

I have just installed LED's in my 120 series and now they are rapidly flashing (Turn Signals) what do i need to do in order to slow the down?

And the second part to this question is where do I find the flasher relay as I have looked everywhere - there is a relay switch which controls the lights etc including spots (could this be it)

You'll need load resistors. IMO, LEDs for turn indicators are a bit of a waste of time. The halogen globes last for a long time and when they flash really quickly is when you know that one has blown.

Soldering on load resistors is also a bit of a pain.

There are a few options from easy/cheap to more complex/more expensive:

      1. Put normal globes back in ;-)
Most probably not what you wanted to achieve

      2. Connect a resistor of some 8 - 10 Ohm and around 10-20 Watts in parallel to each turn signal (if that info is not saying much to you don't go down that path as you might create shorts and electrical problems).
Defeats somehow the purpose of saving power by using LED's.

      3. Modify the flasher relay (not sure if it is the same relay but the link might give you an idea http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/vi...f=174&t=130967). Again don do it if you dont know what you are doing...
Solution might not be strictly ADR compliant, not sure if the change of the flasher speed in case of a damaged blinker bulb is mandatory

      4. Replace the flasher relay with one suitable for LED (might require a bit of search to get the correct one see http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14878)
not sure of compliance and cost

      cheers
      Mike

The only advantage with LED is for the indicators in the bulbar. I got sick of changing out the bulbs on the 120 (taking the bash plates off, change bulb, bash plates back on etc) and fitted LEDs. So the 150 has LEDs from day one. Factory positions I wouldn't bother.

The only problem with LED indicators is that sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.....

Where do I find the indicator relay for these?

fitted leds to all in my rear and indicators up front I never had them not work. Just bought a led type flasher off ebay for like 12$ I think works perfect now . 120s use a 8 pin toyota flasher lexus use the same as do late 90s

So yours don't flash off any more?...

Typical location is under the instrument cluster above the pedals. No idea if this is actually the location in a Prado. Look for a rectangular box again typically about twice the size of a normal relay.

                          They work perfect

Pretty sure the unit on the 120s are behine the lower drivers dash panel have a look around there easy to spot

Although putting resistors in works I dont like that as they get hot and can lead to problems, it also defeats one purpose of fitting leds and thats using less power, fitting resistors in takes the circuit back up to power consumption as before leds

Can you remember which ones you bought? Also, are there LED replacements for Stop/Tail globe?

                            Cheers
