What ATF should I be using on my car? Toyota IV or WS??? Is there an easy way to find out?

Check the handbook scales. If you have the 5 speed auto I think you need the WS fluid no matter if yours is petrol or diesel.

Re Penrite, I made a comment on that in AMTS's link above. Penrite has WS 'qualities' I recall but doesnt quite say its compatible...
        Cheers
        Micheal.

Thanks D4D. My handbook is gone so I had to figure it out on my own...

          http://www.penriteoil.com.au/product...d_products=709

That's the fluid Im talking about ATF LV. It states Toyota WS at the bottom... how can they even mention it if its not compat?

Edit: I noticed that in the thread you were talking about Penrite ATF FS... sure we're talking the same thing? it does say "new" at the top of their page.

Your manual can be found here https://toyotamanuals.com.au/docs/la...jul-07-aug-09/

            Go to page 340:
            4 speed - ATF Type T-IV
            5 speed - ATF WS

I am pretty sure the 5 speed transmissions have WS marked on the fill plug, hence that's what you use.

The genuine oil is much the same price as the Penrite, so just go genuine and eliminate any risk.

              Cheers Andrew

I can get 3x 4L bottles for $120.... Doesnt genuine run upwards of $170? I'm a self-confessed penrite fanboy too.

Thanks for the manual. Im one step closer now at least

Last time I bought genuine it was $55 for 4 litres, if I recall correctly the Penrite was only a few dollars cheaper locally and there was some doubt as to its suitability, those few dollars were cheap insurance I reckon.

                  Cheers Andrew

                    Ok,

Well I'll probably stick with the Penrite as this particular product seems very clear that it's good to go with Toyota WS. I suspect the older Penrite ATF FS is the stuff you may have looked at, I have read similar statements about it not being bang-on with WS (but it doesnt claim to be either). I'm just struggling to find a good reason NOT to use the Penrite at the moment.

LV looks to be the latest and greatest from them specifically for WS compatibility. Besides that, my local Toyo dealer are a pack of price-gougers and want significant $$$ for their fluid.

                    EDIT
Of note, I called a local automatic workshop (a few actually). They said they used Fuchs atf 4400 for all their WS use's without any dramas whatsoever, Fuchs claim Toyota WS AND IV compatible just FYI.

You don't need to remove the pan & change filter.
Auto Oil changes are a good idea.
I put 5lt through mine every 20k, but I'm well set up & it's easy for me. No pan removal.

I recommend it at 100k & every 50k after that you do an oil change using around 8-10ltrs, or as required to get it clean to your liking.
If you remove pan, don't do anything but use genuine filter & gasket.

The 4 speed auto use Penrite fs. Fs is fine for 5 speed also. These oils are better than o.e.
for the 5 speed toyota prefers slightly lower viscosity, but is not a requirement, now that there is lv, I use that, as it's also warranty approved.
Remember thicker oils will protect the trans better. So I'm not saying l.v is better for long life.

                      Or

You can listen to Toyota, " it's sealed for life" what's life? Maybe warranty period? Or in Japan 4years?
Well it's sealed for life then

On the a750f you want to do final oil level check on flat level ground at 40-45 degrees, it will climb fast if the transmission was warm before dropping oil. It will climb slowly if refilled from cold.
Don't mess it up or it may get costly!

                      Have fun!

Could you expand on that final level check a little bit? I plan on using AMTS method with just disconnecting the return line and replacing fluid as I go.
Then I was just going to open the overfill to make sure some dribbles out and put the plug back... whats wrong with that?

Well I got the job done... Glad I did. It was black. Took 16L of penrite to get it back to a reasonable colour. I think I'll start putting 4L in each service for a little while.
$36 per bottle from repco if anyone is interested.

Wow 16 litres - mine was looking pretty good by the 10 or 11 litre mark, you must have had some nastly black gold coming out initially!
                            Cheers

Is the filter a mesh one on the A750f?

                                Hi Guys
I have an 08 Prado 120 D$D 5 speed auto, I want to flush the ATF out and I was thinking of using NULON Synthetic. A friend of mine in Melbourne has done this with his V8 Land Cruiser and he is very pleased with the result.
Now I have called the dealer that I purchased the vehicle from and they will very kindly do the transmission flush for about $400 bucks.
Does anyone have a reccommendation for an auto trans shop here in Perth that I could trust to do it properly.
