Over the last couple of days I have trialed a few Android/Ipad apps with offline maps capabilities on a CM11(Kitkat) phone/Ipad. Here is my ranking:
Sygic GPS. Constant crashes rendered the software unusable for me.
Garmin GPS with OZ/NZ street maps and 25k topo maps on my four year old phone. Still very competitive. Shame that the app is no longer maintained.
Memory-Map with HEMA maps. Pretty good maps. Easy enough to use. Good for a tablet.
Locus Maps with NatMap 250k maps. Fastest display. Nice app.
Hema Maps on Apple Ipad. The best solution for 4WD of the lot. If I'd own an Ipad I would get this app.
I have, and have used the VMS, which became Mudmaps and then Mudmaps 2 app. I also have the Hema 4wd app and the Hema Explorer app on my IPad.
The Hema 4wd app is easily the best of these IMO, its our Go-To app 99% of the time.
I gather there are cheaper options if you are a bit Techo, but if you are a technophobe like me and just want to pay your money and have it work, the Hema is the Ducks Nuts!
Cheers Andrew

Fyi it even works in flight when there is coverage.
The positioning and altitude matches CASA approved apps

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado
I use HEMA on the tablet, only because of their reputation. On the garmin nuvi I found a download called Shonkymaps which adds another map and allows it to be used offroad.
