  • HEMA Explorer app on Android HELP

    Hi Guys

Recently uploaded HEMA Explorer app onto my Samsung Tab 4 10.1. I've downloaded the 1:250 Topo and 1:1mil road map thinking it would work flawlessly when I started tracking, but, unfortunately, it has not. It says it is recording, but no info regarding distance traveled, speed etc is displayed and nothing actually happens.

Am I missing a crucial step to get it working properly? There aren't that many check options to see where I could be going wrong.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Also, is there a way to turn off the HERE maps so it just displays the HEMA offline maps? I try to untick it them but the tick stays displayed. If you're offline does it just ignore or hide the HERE maps?

I've checked my Location settings and changed it to high accuracy which uses GPS sats (idiot, should've checked this first!)

If you are offline it will only show the 1:250000 unless you have downloaded the portion of the map you were driving in with higher detail.
There are still quite a few bugs that need to be ironed out for hema I think mainly with there cloud app. I don't get any POI coming up when I use the hema cloud service but I do on the app (Android).

Also there has been available a 1:150000 available for a while but when you buy the app now it seems to have disappeared. Maybe it was a beta test but it doesn't seem to be available to new subscribers.

Well the prices of hema navigation units is abit silly. I'm thinking of a Samsung tablet with cellular, hema map app mounted on a ram bracket. Would this do the job for touring long distance and some local mountain trips ?

How about an Android tablet without cellular and Memory Map? You can buy the HEMA maps for it.

I havn't actually tried tracking on my samsung tablet.

I can confirm that you dont have to have cellular to have gps function with samsung tablets. The GPS is independant. I have a wifi only tablet and it works very well with Hema, except for some of the hema bugs.

Thanks David. So it tracks where you are etc and you can drop waypoints ok without the GPS function ?

I think that was the case with early iPads (and perhaps other brands). Nowdays Android tablets usually have GPS even if they don't have cellular.

without the gps active it wont know where you are or where to put waypoints.

Just tested tracking and dropping way points with no reception or wifi hotspot from my phone. Gps only records tracks and drops way points no problem.

Might be worth opening a support ticket with hema. I chances are they'll tell you to uninstall and re install the app. I've had to do it before, worked well after that.

They do seem to have the odd bug in the app. But overall its a very good app and its great to be able to navigate "offline" with a samsung tablet!

But as for the ram mount...I just stuck a few velcro tabs on the tablet cover and I stick that to the dash mat and flip the tablet its self over the top air vents and economy display.
