  • Windows down by holding key

I know there is an option in the Prado's computer to make your windows come down by holding the key, but this must be set by the dealer.
So, my car is in for service today and I asked the dealer to switch this setting on. I was told they can do it, but it costs $75.-!
I didn't think it was that important so decided not to go ahead with that...
Is that a normal price for what I thought was a really simple setting? They claim it takes them more than 30 minutes just to get to the computer?

My dealer did it for free, AFAIK it only takes a few minutes to do.

Is your Prado diesel or petrol? If diesel, you will be wanting a techstream cable ($30 deliveredfrom ebay) further down the track (from around 80,000km) to monitor your injector feedback.

Pretty sure you can enable yourself do it via techstream.

To be honest, if you were popping in just for that then I think they have the right to charge you for it. However, if they were already servicing your car then that is rather rude. They should be checking all the latest ECU updates are applied etc as part of service - it would only take another minute or two to enable power window setting.

That's what I thought too - I did ask to do it during service, not just as a standalone request, so I was a bit surprised about the quote. I might need to start thinking about a different dealer for the next service, as if they over charge for something so small, what will they overcharge for the big items??

yep i did mine myself using a techstream cable bought off the internet. takes 2 minutes once setup, so the dealer shouldn't really be charging for it as they'll already be hooked up to your ECU anyway.

Had it done 3 weeks ago with my 15,000km service. No charge from my service dealer. They also, at the same time set the climate control so the AC did not come on in recycle mode, and fitted my radiator bug screen. I did not purchase my Prado from them either.

My dealer also did it for free at one of the early services.

Having had it programmed that way for some time I am not sure of the benefit, I am though sure of the disadvantage. I now have to check that the windows and sun roof are closed all the time.

A few times I have found the windows down and the sunroof open. I keep my keys in my pocket and occasionally they arrange themselves to press the open button without me knowing. Not normally a problem without this option as the doors will relock if unopened after some tens of seconds. However with the option while the doors will relock the windows all stay open. Bit of a security concern as well as a potential problem if it rains.

I will probably disable this option.

                      Cheers

I'm not sure that it's a security concern. You have to hold the button for a while before the windows start going down. You also need to hold the button until they are all the way down.

Also need to be in range for the fob key to activate the windows / doors

We had it on our old Honda Accord Euro. I must say we used it once in the 7 years we had the car. It was a real hot day and as we walked up to it we opened all windows at once and it let some of the hot air out before we got it.
