    • Does seem strange to me too mickmac_42 but the parts catalogue does show the upper pipe as the outlet.

(You're pretty close to me mickmac_42, I'm down the bottom of Mt Tamborine in Maudsland!)

      • I'll be getting my transmission serviced soon. I'll ask the guys if they have any ideas.

          • One install hint - somewhere it talks about filling up the hoses and quickly putting them together. It is possible to be indirectly filling up the transmission once you have one of the hoses fully connected - when you're trying to fill up the second hose the oil goes through the radiator and back to the transmission.

I fitted mine a few weeks ago just before heading on a trip from Sydney to the Flinders Ranges, Simpson Desert & Cameron Corner. I don't have any hard figures to back it up but I feel like the transmission temps on the ScanGauge were a lot lower all the time.

One interesting thing is that the temps were quite low while we were crossing the Simpson from Poeppel Corner. I think it's because most of the time the transmission isn't slipping. The "going up" side of the dunes was relatively short (compared to driving on a beach for example) and the down side/interdune area was easy travelling speed limited by the bumps.

            • After ordering my Tin mounts a couple of months ago, i finally got around to installing it today. The car has just ticked over 170 thousand kilometres so i took it into Gary at Auto Transtech in Slacks Creek and they did a service on the transmission. The fluid was horrible. Dark brown and stank like someone who hasn't showered in a while. There was no rubbish in the pan though, and everything seemed to be functioning well. I had already mounted the cooler with the outlets facing upwards, same as i've seen others do it. Gary changed it around though, saying the system will flow better with the pipes coming out of the bottom. I did need to get an extra 1.5m of hose because the supplied length of hose in the Davies Craig kit wasn't enough.

Gary recommended i have the fluid changed again in 40 thousand kilometres so that i can get a gauge on what sort of life i can expect with consideration to how hard i drive the car.

I asked him about the return line at the top of the radiator and he said it doesn't matter whether the return line comes from the top or bottom of a cooler, the temperature will be pretty much the same.

I've only driven the car for about 25km since, but the temperatures on the Scan Gauge 2 appear about 15 degrees cooler than pre-cooler driving. I'll be going camping in a couple of weeks so i'll see what difference it makes when towing. The highest i've seen it so far is 128 degrees, but i know it has been higher twice before when the warning light came on.

              • Do any of you who have posted tow in overdrive? I have towed a caravan 2T with the stock cooler supplied with the tow bar and the temp doesn't go above 90 deg in D. If I tow in 4th it doesn't shift over 80 deg no matter what I do up hills etc.

                • Cuda, i didn't know if the 150 is fitted with overdrive. The manual says to use sports shift and no higher than 4th gear while towing, so that's what i do. My temps occurred while towing a 1.6 tonne trailer up a steep, rutted dirt track. Otherwise i was averaging 100-110 while towing at about 100kph on undulating highway.

                  • hi, just bought a 2013 D4D Altitude and will be towing our Jayco Swan Outback a fair bit, as well as a lot of beach driving, so probably a good idea to get one.

Where in WA can you get the coolers, SuperCheap?

                    Also, is Tin175 still making/selling brackets for a 150?

Technically it does The A750 Fourth is 1000:1
                            Fifth is 0.716:1
But I totally agree I tow a 2.5tonne van and it won't hold in fifth so 4s is the go. I can easily tow a Jayco camper in D so if it does without hunting up and down use it. But for better control use S in the hills.

                            • With an upcoming trip of 4500km across the top of Australia in January while towing a van I've been setting our Prado150 up with a ScangaugeII and transmission cooler. After reading this post I purchased a set of brackets from Tin ($40 delivered complete with nuts and bolts) and a Davies Craig 678 transmission cooler ($135 delivered from ebay) . I already had a spare extra piece of 3/8" hose and these were all installed in easy time this morning. The only extra item I needed to buy was a metal barb to join with the existing hose.

The brackets from Tin are excellent and are the main reason the install was done so easily as it just lined up perfectly and is a very neat install. For anyone doing this install the brackets are worth every cent so catch up with Tin and order a set.

We had temps pushing 40C here today but I still saw a drop in ATF temp of about 15C over normal running temps that I saw on the run just before the install.

With 90,000km on the clock and some towing over the past 18 months, the colour of the fluid is more brown than pink, so now that I've fitted the cooler I'll get the filters changed and the transmission flushed in the next couple of weeks. The flush has been quoted at $400-$600 depending on the amount of fluid used (could be up to around 20L) to get a good return to pick colour and includes a filter replacement so doesn't seem too bad compared to my own costing of the parts and doing it myself.

installed the DC 678 cooler with Tins brackets on my 150 serise facelift model. Only issues I found was one of my 3/8 tubes coming out of the cooler was rubbing on Tins bracket as the tube was wedged betwenn the cooler bracket and air-con bracket. I fixed this by splitting some tube to cover the edge on the cooler bracket. From there the tubes run on top of all the coolers to the cold trans outlet on the radiator.

I was lucky enough to get 400mls of toyota tranny oil for free and just added most of it to the cooler and tubes. As my car has 20k on the clock with about 5 of it towing a boat, the tranny oil was still cherry red.

I have had my scan guage pretty much since new and have seen my auto sitting most days around the 80 mark. In heavy traffic I can get to 90. Now lm seeing it going no more then 65 and it take pretty the whole trip in traffic to reach it. The last few nighs on the open hwy it didnt get over 45. Shift changning is a lot smoother and cleaner and the tc slip doesnt feel so laggy.. Yet to tow the boat, but from the results already l knowits going to be a positive... cant wait.

this is a must do even if not towing

I towed the boat up to the South Coast from Melb and was very happy with the results.
The boat is on a un-brake trailer so max 750kg...more around the 600kg mark.

Drove in Sports mode while going up hills in 4th and flat roads in 5th. Fuel consumption was better in 5th then 4th while on flat roads. was sitting on 100-110km

Outside temp was mostly 25deg and went down to 18deg.

The oil temp was mostly sitting on 58deg and not once did the tranny oil hit 65deg on hills.
