  • Changing the power steering fluid for a KZJ95 manual

    Looking through my Haynes it says to use a syringe to suck the P/S fluid out and then replace with fresh stuff. If this is the correct way then no probs, however I would think that some old stuff will still be left in unless you do this a number of times.
    Does anybody have any other suiggestions?

    Yeah, pretty much a waste of time doing just that. You need to flush the system through somehow, either by running and draining over and over, or you can do what I did and use a vacuum bleeder to pull the old fluid through as you top up with fresh. If you want to avoid having to do it every six months (coz it gets black that quick) you can also fit a trans oil cooler in front of the radiator (largest Davies Craig, even the hose barbs match up to the 3/8" hoses) in the return line just upstream from the power steering res. Also put a magnefine filter in line as well, your PS rack will love you for it. I have about 40k on the present fluid and it looks almost new.

      Syringe out old , overfill ,remove low pressure return hose to catch old PS fluid (ATF fluid) , run for 2-seconds (do not let it run dry-start and off) overfill ,repeat untill clean fluid runs through,,, similar to an auto flush
      I second the magnefine filter ,,i would also recommend a cooler, i run a PS cooler off an F250 , its done about 10k kms now and the fluid looks great

        Thanks for the feedback. As a short term fix for over the xmas break I have syringed out the old P/S fluid refilled it ran the motor and repeated, used two litres to flush out the system after doing this 5 or six times until it was nearly clear.
        I will be going with the filter and cooler.
        I would appreciate any pics of the install as that will be a job for the new year.
        Will I need new hoses or can I just cut the existing hose?
        How is the filter mounted and to what?

          Hi Gerry, you will need a short lenth of hose , i have the low pressure return hose from the steering rack,removed from the pump and brought through to behind the front grill to the cooler,, then the new hose from the cooler to the magnifine filter( mounted to the back of the radiator shroud- with a 60mm pipe clamp bolted to the shroud ) and a short hose from the filter to the pump, i will post photos soon

            If you have a dual battery setup there is room on the radiator support bodywork right next to the rad to cut two holes one above the other for the hoses to pass through. Use a conecut/step drill to open up the holes and some sort of grommet or that nylon toothed strip to protect the hose. Brissy's description is exactly how I have it plumbed.
