  • 150 horn

People My girls car horn is failing ( and it ain't age) .It works only intermittently . The fuse is okay, the horn works sometimes and then refuses to work even though it was shortly before .How hard is it to get into the switch in the steering column . I realize you will need to disconnect the battery for a time but where do you go from there ? Any suggestions?

I would be thinking the horn first. Hardware does fail. One car I had the horn failed three times because the location of it meant excess road spray entered the unit. Don't know if this is a possibility in the pradopoint or not.

Thank you Peter SA I'm not sure either as the horn works sometimes when I jiggle the cover but then won't work at all until I do a bit more trying to move the cover . It can't be the fuse because then it would not work at all .Anyway I'll keep probing Cheers Foxy

Check for power at the horn. If that is ok buy a Sebel Nautilis or similar and set that up as recommended with a new fused power supply using the horn power as trigger. The horn could be full of wasps or just dead.

mjrandom, Mate, thank you . It seems the power is either intermittent or there is something loose in the Column. I can press all over the airbag and nothing happens then all of a sudden it will fire up so to speak but then when I stop to restart(press) the horn nothing .I'll have to test the fuse holder as you suggest and or look at alternatives .My son had trouble with his Nissan and we had to replace the whole internals of the steering column I hope i don't have to go that far but it seems an after market horn may well be the way to go . BTW where is the horn in the 150 shorty ? Have a safe and blessed Christmas to all <Cheers Foxy

            Hey,

Your factory horns should be up the front of the radiator.

You could always pull the horns out and plumb them straight to a battery and check they're working ok! Just put a switch in series off the power feed so you can turn them off so you don't upset the neighbors!

Mj has the best idea, it's one of the first things I did in my Prado, airhorns are awesome!

Just remember after you have disconnected the power you will need to reset the auto windows after reconnect.

Sounds like it might be the clock spring under the steering wheel, pretty sure there was an issue with these in the Hiluxes we had on site a few years back, the lv guys were replacing about 1 a week for a while there.

Pretty sure there is a clock spring recall on the 150's.

Mine had the recall on its last service - if yours has not had the recall, get it done. This may in turn fix your issue.

If your's HAS been done, I wonder if they potentially stuffed it up..... loose connection maybe?

Wow, thank you people I have just done some tests and have found the horns are working when I jump them across the terminals on the battery .When my Lady sits in the chair with the ignition on there is no charge at the horns and going by what you have just said makes a lot of sense .No mine has not had the recall as yet ."she" is due for the 90 K service so I'll get them to do it then It definitely seems to be in the steering housing .Cheers and a big thank you Foxy

Hi people Well I have just rang my Toyota Dealer and there is no recall on my particular model even though the time span is the same .The recall is for the GX model only and only from 2009- June 2010 My girl is a 04 2010 build short wheel base SX model so I guess I dip out and I will have to have a go myself but I'm pretty sure it is the spring . so the next Question is how do I get to the spring Any idea's Cheers Foxy

                          Hey,

I'm not sure if it has changed on the 150, but on the 120 there are apparently x2 airbag connectors which you need to disconnect according to my manual. There should be some torx screw on the side to undo.

Have a squiz at this youtube video for a Hilux, it will give you a general idea.

                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jllh2VjM4H8

Make sure you have disconnected the battery before you start, and be careful not to pull on the airbag cables.

You should be able to get to the horn assembly after that.

Be careful, and if you're not confident, just get a mechanic to do it for you, it shouldn't be more than a 30min job for a competent mechanic!

                              Hey Foxy,

Good plan, enjoy the festive season and don't sweat it!

...there is another homegrown alternative, albeit not as advanced as pressing on the normal horn spring on the steering wheel.

You could run a bypass circuit for the horn and use a momentary switch in the dash panel to run it. Not the greatest idea I know reaching to the dash to activate the horn, but at least you'll have some horns in the meantime!

...just for fun, you could set up a truckies pull down horn line!

                              Chrissy food for thought!

                              Merry X'mas!

                              Best from the Bris
