  • Navigation aids.

What's everyone's thoughts on the hema navigator app/s available and similar mobile apps. Not sure whether I should purchase and app or fork out the coin for a new hema navigator. If anyone has any opinions on the subject to help me make a decision would be handy. Cheers.

well, it kinda depends. what sort of tablet or phone do you have? if you have a good one with lots memory spare then buy an app. the maps can take up a bit of room. there is a separate subsection on the forum with loads of threads on the subject. maybe have a read through there, this question comes up quite often.
for the record I use an iPad Air 2 with Hema 4wd maps and Hema Explorer.
    Cheers

Yeah I just found the GPS thread and had a bit of a read. Would still be interested in people's reviews on what they have...

I only ask because I found myself a little lost on a new track yesterday... A navigation aid would have been handy...

They're certainly useful if you don't know where you are! If you've already got a device (phone or tablet) with GPS and just want to know where you are, they work just as well as the standalone IMO at a fraction of the price of the navigator. Though I've found myself becoming reliant on them rather than paying attention to where I am going and taking note of landmarks etc. You could get too reliant on them and then come unstuck after equipment failure.

I use an iPhone 5 with Memory Map and the full Hema Maps downloaded + I've downloaded portions of NSW in 1:250k topo for the areas I go to. I use it because I've also use it on my mountain bike/bush walking and its easy to carry. I also carry back up paper maps and a compass. Call me old school but I feel safer with an anlaog backup

A 7" screen tablet would be nicer, the phone can be a bit small but haven't had issues with the phone screen size so far. I can't justify the cost at the moment (the Hema purchase came with a 2 mobile device licence so can easily add one if needed)

Memory map on Android pads works well too. You can store the maps on the SD card if the onboard device memory is insufficient, as is almost always the case.

Its a free app with free Aus topo 1:250,000 maps. You then pay for most other maps including Hema and 4WD Australia.

                Dedicated GPS unit

I had a look at the Hema Navigator HN7, VMS Touring 700, and my friends iPads and Android tablets with apps before settling on the VMS.

I had good prior experience with VMS and it came with tons of maps including 1:25k scale NSW, Vic, Qld, and WA Topo maps, Camps7, Hema maps, Gregory's touring maps etc. Preferred dedicated unit with all the maps which I need and I don't need iPad.

I bought the VMS Touring 700HD X Outback Adventure Pack I from GPSOZ (http://www.gpsoz.com.au) in Sydney.

                Works very well.

Once Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet comes out then I think I will get it and load maps from Garmin (bushwalking) and VMS on it. Would be great to have a tablet which is also a fully working computer for travel.
