  • Aftermarket steering arms problems

Just a heads up on a recent problem I found.

In Jul 2014 I purchased aftermarket steering arms for my Prado from a local Sydney eBay seller, they looked good, fitted well and were less than $50 for the pair. Now less than 6 months old and less than 10,000km of mostly commuting on bitumen roads they are totally stuffed with lots of slop. See the video below. The red is a Mobile synthetic grease I used during the initial install.

I have been noticing twitchy steering of late and put it down to what I believed to be worn steering rack bushes so I purchased Whiteline power steering rack bushes and installed them. When I was putting it all back together I noticed both steering arms had heaps of slop.

In this picture you can see the nylon has been destroyed and started to be squeezed out of the ball joint. I would hate to see what might have happened if this was left for much longer. It could have been extremely dangerous with the arms totally letting go.

Today I fitted new arms supplied by REPCO a much more reputable seller of spare parts. These were much more expensive, $90 each but I am sure they will last much longer. I get a wheel alignment in the morning.

You get what you pay for, its my fault, I should have know better

Agree with we get what we pay for. When it comes to safety, please use the best you can afford. Bendix pads, original or name suspension parts, the best tyres you can buy with your budget. The best oil and filters you can buy or have it serviced by a good private mechanic. Save coin on the other stuff, carpets, seat covers, mud flaps, and the like.
So when you are out back some ware you can be faily confident you will make it home.

It's the old story, just because they don't cost much to buy doesn't mean they are cheap.

      Cheers Andrew

On a similar but different part, my service report noted the left upper ball joint is worn, after calling Bursons, Repco and Toyota, Toyota were the cheapest and the only ones that could supply the part overnight.

Did you check genuine prices for your steering arms?

        Cheers Andrew

Hi Andrew, normally yes I check with Toyota first but didn't in this case, I think I read on here somewhere that Toyota were charging several hundred each so didn't look into it anymore. I think the Repco quality should be good? Another option I thought about changing the whole steering rack, I have seen these on eBay (genuine Toyota) for about $1250. After checking my rack I couldn't detect much free play so decided it was only the tie rods that required replacement.
