Put in the egr blocking plate today (with 7mm hole)...took about 30 mins and is not that hard if you have the plate that slides around the bolts. Went for a drive, accelerator felt doughy, whining turbo strange sound :0 got me worried...came back read another post on this forum about why you shouldn't block unless you can do what you guys are talking about here...and went back out and removed the plate. Will spend more time reading now....before doing things.

That's kinda interesting... maybe #### has an idea about this?

Already read that & it's not consistent with the hundreds of examples I know of.
People are plating up every day & feedback is good.

            My experience was exactly this
            quoted from this archive post.

            Hi all

I have done another basic description on the EGR system of the 1KD D4D engine & this does NOT apply to the 1KZ mainly due to the Turbo & EGR configuration.

May I also add that i did not do this write-up to start an argument but to let those who are not fully mechanically minded to have a better understanding.

On the 1KZ engines the turbo has a mechanical waste gate attached to the external of the turbo which is operated by manifold pressure and independent of the EGR system so when you block the EGR port everything runs happy (Better) and no more EGR gases are pumped into the intake manifold and you get to run the engine on nice clean air and boost pressures are not provoked.

If you block or restricted the EGR system on the 1KD D4D engine by fitting a blanking plate you will inadvertently increase fuel consumption (Worse) and cause loss off power backed up with an engine check light with error code

You can get rid of the error code by drilling a whole in the middle of the banking plate (10mm) which will stop the error code but you will still cause issues globally due to the restriction of the turbo boost dumping process!

REASON: The 1KD has a variable high press turbo which is mechanically adjusted via an electronic solenoid which is solely controlled by the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to improve the spooling of the turbo depending on engine rpm.

IF this doesn't make things harder to by-pass the EGR system then what follows will! The 1KD does not have a simple system like on the 1KZ's but rather a system where the turbo boost is sent BACK through the EGR cooler on the same path in-order to dump the access turbo boost back into the exhaust. (EGR valve in the intake throat opens to let exhaust gases in but also opens to let access turbo boost out).

Depending on engine load the excess turbo boost needs to be dumped immediately. If this is not accomplished then the turbo boost will hang around in the intake manifold and inter-cooler which will cause a leaning off (Weak Mixture) in the combustion chamber and the boost that is trapped will back-flow back into the inter-cooler then pushed through the air filter box in order to escape. This will also put the dirty air and EGR gases across the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. This will also be recognised by the turbo sensor located on the turbo inter-cooler which will be sent to the ECU and will in-turn drop the fuel rail pressure to try and reduce the access boost that has been trapped!

OUTCOME: Even though the car will drive "ok" it will feel doughy at the pedal and feel like you are driving in a head wind and your fuel consumption will get worse not better.

I know that this whole principle of the 1KD sux but apart from being stuck with EGR gases it is a very officiant principle.

Interesting comments. I have the 7mm hole restricter and fuel consumption has not changed at all.
Doesn't feel doughy, actually if you didn't know i did the mod you would not pick it.

The excess boost would not be able to vent through the EGR at the rate you mention. Remember on the D4D motor the butterfly closes to create vacuum in the manifold for the EGR to bleed into the manifold. As soon as a diesel fuel is removed (lift foot) the boost will drop, no fuel not as much flow of gases. The orifice in the EGR is about 12-14 mm so in reality it is a very small hole. Exhaust gas would be higher pressure than charge air, possible 1.5 to 2 times. So if you have 10psi boost in the inlet, you would have 15-20psi in the exhaust before the turbo. Open the egr to vent boost and exhaust will flow into the inlet.

Just my view, could be wrong as well.

After putting in the blank and driving around until at op temp (scanguage11) I found that I needed more pedal to get going...there was a very long drawn out almost turbo whistle like noise low down before and after acceleration almost like a high pitched wheezing noise like turbo but not sure more like a whistle?. Maybe there was a leak in the area of the blanking plate but pretty sure it was sealed as when removed the carbon markings were all contained to the 26mm or so area. Worried me a bit and after reading the past posts about blanking the 1kd decided to remove it for the time being. Its not a hard job to re-fit so might be brave and give it another go down the track.

What you quoted in post 35 is theory, which was different to my theory, has been proven hundreds of times over incorrect.
Now we are dealing with facts.
Sorry to Chris, as he does have lots of good info & posts.

The results of the mod vary, because operation of the egr varies from vehicle to vehicle. Also depends on your driving style.
Fuel economy reported is anything from 0 to 3klms/100k improvement.
Usually about 1 is being modest.
Fuel economy can't get worse. It has no other option but to suck clean colder filtered air through the intake, rather than the exhaust via the egr.

Perhaps your air filter is blocked? The more blocked your air filter is the more the vehicle will suck from egr.
                  Think about it.

I think he must have another problem. Blank plate has been in now for 3 months and over 10000km with not a single issue. My car does feel like it's a little more responsive. My fuel economy has improved when towing by staying closer to the 100km/hr mark instead of a bit over that.

I started this thread and it was nothing to do with restricting the EGR it was about plumbing back to fresh air instead of exhaust gases. As an update on this i have had the initially described setup in now for 40000km and have only twice in this period had the engine light come on. Since seeing the improvements in power fuel consumption and cleanliness of the oil I have shown the Mrs how to check and clear the code with a cheap reader I keep in the car. I really don't have a problem with this.

                        Nice work.

with the plate that can't be seen, no engine light, improved fuel consumption, more responsive at low load, much cleaner oil, & all the other benefits of less soot.
It's an option for people who may want to reverse it, it's fully reversible. It can't be seen either.
Most people don't want to deal with engine lights.

What code are you getting with the engine light?

                          Hi Mozz,
I commend on your success of the EGR mod. It should be working fine. You are emulating the EGR condition with clean air. What can go wrong?
Car computer wouldn't know anything unless they have some sort of exhaust gas sensor.
By the way, I won't be able to do that mod in NSW or Sydney area because of annual regio inspection.
I was even picked about Provent oil catch can being illegal by some idiot.
It took me quite sometime explaining what it does and should be good for environment and car.
I recon they will pick that EGR mods straight away where I live because the pipe is visible.
I wish I live where you live.
                          However, congratulations.

                              Wow what a contrast!
I have never had an inspection where they didn't lift bonnet.
As far as I can remember they always lifted bonnet and checked compliance plate for regio inspection.
I am not unlucky you are the lucky one Signature035.

I could probably go to my friend who own a car repair workshop but it is too far away.
He would pass me for the inspection for sure but he would even be more interested inspecting my car because I have all the bells and whistles installed in my car.

I did play around mechanical means of EGR emulation which worked fine as long as your feeding pipe size is same as original EGR pipe which feeds to EGR valve. It was 1 inch pipe.
But I got rid of it due to someone might notice and pick in the annual inspection time.
You can always connect scan tool to see egr error value it should be +- 1%.
Instead now I have electronic ways to get rid of EGR system without any visible mechanical means.
