I knew I had seen Balfour track recently. I saw this photo on FB and thought geez that must be a good track to drive down.

Had a FB message come through just last week that a guy need help on the Balfour. He went down it solo and got seriously stuck. He spent a cold and wet night before they could get in to retrieve him.
I haven't been down it, but have been warned that it is hard on your vehicles seals - apparently the fine particles in the bog holes gets into them.

Just to confirm, is sandy Cape on the itinerary? I couldn't see it listed but maybe it's part of one of the loops and not being familiar, I just didn't get it. It looks great though so if it's not part of the gtg, I'll plan to do it separately. Love sand driving and we had a week before planned for exploring tas anyway.

No it is not, unfortunately. The thing to remember, (and I thought the same thing when I moved here), Tassie is small - but it takes large travel times to go to these places.

Sandy Cape is the type of destination that you need to pencil in and find what the conditions are like when you get here, and also need to know who you will have with you, as I would advise not going solo (the rangers hut has a board full of pictures of vehicles that didn't make it back due to getting stuck in quicksand on the beach). This year I know of at least four or five vehicles that have been killed down there - most with reasonably experienced drivers.
I love getting down there, but it isn't a place that could be guaranteed to be good at that time of year, so realisticly couldn't be included on the itinerary even if there was room.

There's a $50 pass for the Arthur-Pieman area (where Sandy Cape is) plus a $6 per vehicle per night camping fee.

Well that looks absolutely horrible! Why would anyone want to go there!
Thank you for sharing and it looks amazing!
Add more urgency to getting there in the near future.

Just got to get my wife to stop spending money on the house so I can spend on the prado and get out more.

No worries, Dad and I will be there for a week before I go to the GTG and a day and a half after so we could go and explore before joining the GTG or squeeze in a bit after. We've both got well set up vehicles and I imagine there might be others hanging around who would be keen for a look (Richo?). We've got a week to see what we can of Tas so don't want to miss too much but after the cadbury factory, this will be pretty high on my list. I'll do some more reading up now that you've warned me about the quicksand and I take Palmer's advice that the conditions may not be suitable so I won't set it in stone that I have to go and risk my car or anything. We're usually pretty flexible.

I'm curious whether you think a day trip is feasible though to get in there or should I plan to spend a night (or two) there to get the most out of it?

Depending where you start from, I'd be looking at a night minimum - ie: it would be around 8hrs from the cadbury factory and that is without stopping to have a look around. Plus by the time the GTG rolls around, there will be new sections of track opened up down there.

Is it possible for you Tassie blokes to start a new thread with some suggestions for places to see/do for us 'out of towners'. It sounds like a lot of us are either getting there early or staying later and I'm sure we all want to see as much of the Apple Isle as possible.

Just stuff that you guys have done and think it could be interesting for someone else.

                      Cheers

Great idea and it is on the list of things to do. We will start a thread with ideas and links so you can start to make a list to make your way around the state.

That would be great as we will be there for 2 weeks after the GTG and we don't know much about tassie.
