  • Roadsafe Front Recovery Point Installation Issues

    Hi Guys,

I'm having an absolute mongrel of a time trying to fit a pair of Roadsafe Front Tow/Recover Points to my 2013 150 Series Prado Diesel.

    1) The yellow plates will not sit flush to the side of the chassis rail as they are obscured by some welding on the chassis rail.
    2) The bolt to go in the rear most position into the chassis rail with a backing nut is too big for the hole.
    3) The plate welded to the nuts is too big to fit down the hole in the chassis rail.

    I've attached photos below.

Has anyone done their own install? The instructions that Roadsafe supply are very basic at best, with minimal photos. I'm starting to think I've got the wrong model, however the yellow points are stamped with prado 150.

Any advise would be great. I've tried ringing Roadsafe however they are closed for the day.

This is where it doesn't sit flush with the chassis rail.

I fitted the same road safe recovery points.

There is a large rectangular hole further up the chassis rail close to the shock strut. You can pass the tapped plate through this hole.

I also found that the recovery point fouled on some weld. I just used a couple of washers to space it clear.

Thanks for the advice however I can't find any larger holes on my vehicle.

        Chassis hole

My 150 is a 2010 non face lift. Is yours a facelift model?

Here is a picture of the front right chassis rail. You can see the shock strut on the left and the recovery point on the right. I have left the wire of the tapped plate hanging out of the hole.

I used the same hole to pass the nut plate in on my facelift, but fitted them up over a TJM steel bar so that may have mitigated the weld issue. The bolt is a very tight fit in the hole in the chassis, it caused me some issues too, but perseverance paid off, and with a bit of help from the missus holding a torch I eventually got it.

from what I can see your look to be going about it the wrong way.
if you have no bullbar nothing to remove.
the front hole has the threaded hole in the chassis, I put the front bolt on first and tightened it slightly so it would not move.
then used a soft hammer to tap it to line up with the rear hole, and put the nut in the chassis thru the elongated hole.
the rear hole needs the nut with the wire.
from memory you get 6 bolts with washers and nuts in the kit.
you only need to use 2 bolts and washers and 1 nut on the wire per side.
            facelift Prado no weld issues.
the arrow is where you put the nut on the wire thru.

I recently purchased and installed amts 3 bolt recovery points on my 120. He supplied different thickness washers to properly fill the gap due the welds being various thickness

Thanks a lot guys. All done now thanks to your help. I was trying to do the left hand side and the whole to pass the nut through was obscured. Also with perseverence and the g holding a torch, I have it all done and the car back together. The bonus is, no spare parts!

It seems I spent a few hours swearing whilst taking the bumper off for no reason.

                Cheers!

I too am having some difficulty fitting these recovery points (150 GXL).
Left side goes on fairly easily, but right side is a different story. There's a bracket for some gizmo partially obscuring the top bolt, making it very difficult to get the bolt straight enough to marry up to the retaining nut in the chassis. Even if I were succesful, that brack will sit on, and rub, the bolt.
Pic shows the bracket/guard hard up against the recovery point

Bracket doesn't totally obscure the bolt hole, but makes it very difficult to insert. Even when in place, this bracket will sit on, and rub the bolt head.

That plastic cover can be pulled aside to fit the bolt. When you put it back in place it barely touches and in 40k I haven't had a problem.

Do you need to unbolt the plastic cover? It is pretty bloody hard to push it aside, while holding the wire for the retaining nut, and screwing the bolt in....

I unbolted and removed the plastic cover, then refit it after it had the recovery point bolted in.

i just looking at your picture then looking back at the one i posted as i didn't recall having this problem.
Is the recovery point in the final position in your picture?
It looks like the hole under your bracket it the one i used so the rear of the bracket sits lower.
12mm hole so the bolt was a neat fit.
