  • 90 Series 3.4 V6

    Hi everyone, first off I'm new.

    Wanting to get a 1996 V6 prado. Looked over some threads and couldn't find anything on the "lifespan" on these engines, how many kms are they likely to perform reliably for? Looking at one with 270k on the clock

    The V6's generally are a pretty robust engine but like everything depends on how it has been maintained.       A mate had one for a while, bought it with 425,000k on it. Ran fine. Good engine if regular maintenance is done. Don't be scared by high k's if its in good nic. Bought mine with 199k on it, now at 245k. Starter is playing up a bit but that is all.

        bought mine @ 260k and now @ 390k

        still runs fine albeit not very fast

        Replaced a few things over the years like clutch, starter motor, alternator etc but I give it a hard time and just usual wear an tear really.

          Thanks everyone. Very helpful, going to have a look tomorrow and make sure no rust or anything obvious. Will check out the link Ian. I'll have to get used to the now very fast part mrkrinkle, not many vehicles as fast as my V8 ute I'm selling! Lol

            Had a look and drive, everything appeared to be good. Little bit of oil around join between rear prop and transmission. Hope this is ok???

              If you mean oil coming from the rear of the transfer case, where the rear prop shaft is connected, that means the rear transfer seal requires replacement. It can be driven as long as transfer oil level is monitored/topped up. When it happened to mine it took several months to affect the oil level significantly. It will need replacement of course - have a read here: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...r-Box-Oil-Leak Depending on how you feel about that particular repair task, I wouldn't consider this a deal breaker.

                  I had one earlier this year... It had 570 on it! The motor only then seized (neglect I think) .... Anyway put my old v6 in it
                  Just check all the suspension rubbers they get a bit loose in there old age

                    That's scott. I'll be picking it up later this week and giving it the 4x4 enthusiast service just to be on the safe side. Think I'll get a pro to do trans seal tho, just to be on the safe side. It's terrible....already thinking about subtle mods/improvements. First on the list some fresh suspension
