  • Sinking/ dropping/ seam cracking rear doors.

Hi all . After purchasing our drive ealier this year we noticed a seam fracture in the lower left side of the rear door which, at that stage, was around three inches long. It has since, and rapidly spread up the door to over half way. The door is hanging low and needs to be lifted to be closed. I have heard of people having a diagonal cable fitted inside the door itself from top left to bottom right to pull the door back into alignment and lift it. Apparently it occurs because of the weight of the spare wheel on the outside.

Does anybody have any alternates, apart from buying a new door? Apparently the door seam cannot handle a weld penetration as it is mild and shallow. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to find a good welder to fix the seam. Everything else will be a bandaid fix and create even more stress to the broken weld seam. Apparently the later model years had a better door weld seam. What year is yours?

The main thing to watch out for is not to have the door being flung open by the wind.

Thanks for the reply. Ours is a 10/09 build. Would the weld still support the weight of would I be better off getting a duel wheel carrier fitted before having it welded?

If done properly, the weld should support the weight. Mine is 03 and I believe still the original door.
For now, it is best to remove the spare tyre and carry it inside if this is an option.

Exactly same with mine. I have a 2005 model. Bought it in 2012 and 2 weeks later the wife let the door 'fall open' on a steep side slope and it cracked the weld. Door sags about 5mm at the latch so have to give it a gentle lift to make it close without banging. I have adjusted the hinge as far as it will go. It doesn't seem to have particularly gotten worse in the last 2 years, though we are very careful not to let it fly open again. I haven't bothered to fix it. Maybe some kind person will rear-end me at a set of lights one day LOL.

there is a quick cheap fix described on here somewhere which I did. Buy some apprise sized washers. Support the door. Loosen the Bottom hinge bolt and take out the lower one. Insert 1 or 2 washers and re tighten. Fixed.

This works good, lifts the sagging door and closes the "gap" . I am on my third door and it still split/dropped.

even the 2009 ones which should have the newer, "upgraded" welds in that area still get splits like that... best to not have anything on that door so it wont get any more damage..

Is it actually a weld? It is too thick and smooth to be a weld. I've always thought that it was but I'm not so sure.

                      Generally
Let it go bang open & you will F$&k it.
Or look after it & it will be ok.
                      Simple.

When I spoke to Toyota Brighton about my bent window channel and bent drivers door frame around the door restrainer strap, they said they also reset bent rear doors with wooden blocks by carefully jamming them in the rear door opening. Maybe door frame would need to be reset after careful weld repair to cracked seam.
