  • How to Reset ECU on 120 D4D? Does the ECU relearn?

I'm sure someone has posted on PP how to do this, but my searching is proving fruitless..

How do you reset the ECU on the 120 series D4D Prado? Is it as simple as disconnecting the battery for a period of time? If so, how long?

I have been reading about base and trim fuel and ignition timing maps and relearning on other forums. Can anyone confirm whether the D4D ECU uses trim maps and are these cleared and then relearnt after an ECU reset?

I'm about to do a couple of modifications and my thinking is that this might ensure that the best performance gains occur? Or is it all a waste of time??

From what i know, you can disconnect the battery for a while, about 30mins to let it reset or you can simply disconnect the battery, turn the ignition key on, lights on, hit the brakes and it will drain any residual power in the system. Just remember you will need to reset your clock, radio, auto windows etc.

Then connect the battery up, start the car with all things turned off, idle for about 30-60 sec, then take it for a good run. Should be all you need to do. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone ?

Just pull the ECM fuse out for a couple of minutes and you won't have to reset your clock radio etc.

        On 1kd it's 2 minutes.
I usually recommend depressing the brake to drain any capacitors.

Awesome, thanks for the help folks

Any opinions on the ECU relearning? Does resetting the ECU clear the trim maps?

I'm not sure of the details, one procedure in fault rectification, eg; injector knock or rattle, is the 2 minute thing.
            I assume it resets/clears & relearns.
The 150 series do an auto re learn for injectors every 5000k.

The ECU must retain some memory otherwise you would need to code the injectors every time there was a battery disconnect.
