Yet another dual battery question

I know there is a thousand dual battery threads and I have gone thru a few of them including every page of the main one in the 150 section. The search function is not the best here as it brings up too many results

Want I wanted to know is

1. I'm installing a redarc sbi12 isolator underbonnent and the red arc site say to install a 100a cb/fuse near both batteries. I'm using 32mm cable to connect them and was going to install the cb near the main battery but the 1 between isolator and aux battery would be between 2 very short cables as the isolator would be sitting right next to the battery. There would probably be less than 200mm all up. Is it necessary?

2. Anybody running a d34 optima yellow top as their main battery. I was going to get that as my aux battery and when the main died swap it over then get another d34 later. When I asked the guy at autobarn to suggest a optima he said only the d27f is suitable. But I think that is too large and heavy for either side without a few mods

You need to consider what would happen if you get a ground on the cable going to
the other battery, in such a case the fuse on that battery will blow, if the car is
running your isolator will be connecting the cranking battery to the ground so an
overload will occur, if the isolator has overload protection then it should turn off
and hopefully protect things. If it doesn't then it will either smoke up or start cutting
in and out, turning off the motor should stop that provided you remember to turn it off.

Other option if your sure the short cable won't get grounded, put a section of convoluted
tube over it as double insulation to be safe and then possibly fit a fuse the output side
of the isolator to protect the isolator from overload if required?

So can anyone help me with the second question. Does anybody use a d34 optima as their main battery, or do you just use the larger d27f? Was the d27f an easy fit?

You could use the D34, most use the D27.

Keep in mind though that the Optima does not have a lot of Ah capacity,
if you garage the car for long periods you might be better off looking at
a Marine pro etc.

I've only just got a Prado but in other 4bys I had I like the fact that the optima use to recharge very quickly in relatively short drives. So basically just need it to run a fridge and some lights for up to 36hrs

Depends on how you intend to use the fridge, the fridge size etc. A fridge might draw 2-4 Ah
when used as a fridge in mild climates, it could draw twice that when used as a freezer in hot
climates, so anywhere from 48 amp hours per day to 192Ah a day!

A D27 from memory is 65 Ah so even 36 hours at 2 Ah average would be pushing it, hence why dual battery systems are popular.

Isolator in our set up.

Used a duel 100 amp. One for the main line to the rear of the car for the second fuse box and the other for a Anderson plug in the bullbar. Used a piece of 25 x 3 steel bent to support the circuit breaker. Left enough cable so when needed can undo the wing nuts and move out of the way.

Looks like a Bluesea one to me mate. Lots of em on eBay. I got a dual postive one with negative bus.
Edit: mine is a Narva one though

That one came from the LED shop on southpine road, Brendale.
Use one with screw type terminals. Avoid the push on type as volt drop will occur.
