So only tablets with SIM card slots have inbuilt GPS/Glonass capabilities? As long as the tablet in question has GPS/Glonass written in the connectivity section in it's specs it should be able to obtain a relatively accurate position without the need for a SIM/3G, right?

Or does everyone here running a tablet also have a working SIM running to aid the whole process?

If you buy an Android tablet, it will have GPS capabilities. It is one of the advantages over an ipad if you are budget conscious.

I'm running Ozi on a Samsung tablet with an SD card. 'Ozi for Android' is installed on the device, and all the maps are saved on the SD card with Ozi directed to retrieve the maps from the card. Works a treat.

Well finally had a good read of all the pros & cons, features of GPS and Tablets so I decided today while I was at TJM Underwood, to purchase the HEMA7 ($560) and get use to that initially. From there I will use a tablet for pre tour plotting etc. So much to get the grey matter around, it can be confusing at times.
Big thanks to those that headed me in the right direction.

            Hi all,
I have been running a VMS 700hd that's also loaded with offroad maps for a few years now and it's great.
Had an issue with the power supply cig adapter but it was replaced even after the warranty ran out so no complaints there.
Would go a dedicated gps unit over a tablet again when needed as it stays in the car all of the time.
I'm sure if I had my iPad hanging off the windscreen some asshat would find it too tempting...

I rum Memory Map on my cheap Android 10". It works great. Just don't let it over heat in the sun, or you may destroy the battery.

So I've taken the plunge and gone for the Galaxy Tab 4 WiFi 16GB as I couldn't justify the price for a 3G/4G model or the Tab S, just too much $$ when we have all the other gizmos around the house as well. Can't wait to get the maps loaded up and take it out for a test run somewhere soon. I'm hoping the GPS unit will be up to the task of keeping lock on enough satellites to maintain a relatively accurate position, having both GPS and GLONASS should be more than enough I would think. Anyone ever had any problems with losing lock when on tracks/outback?

Also, are the RAM mounts the leaders in the field when it comes to the most solid windscreen mount?

My Ipad has as good a GPS location hookup as any other stand alone GPS that I have used, never had an issue with it showing us in the wrong location, which is more than I can say for a Garmin we had that once had us camping in the middle of spencer gulf

I took an ASUS 7 inch tablet on the Canning Stock Route attached to a RAM mount and it never moved an inch or missed a beat, while the old 90 series really took a pounding.

Tablets generally have higher screen resolution than gps units which makes a difference in bright conditions. In the space of 4 years I've gone from a 4.3 inch gps to a 5 inch gps and now the old eye sight is struggling with the 7 inch tablet so I might have to pinch the wife's 10 inch Samsung next time.

For remote touring, I dont think you can go past a tablet on a RAM mount.

Is the single suction cup more than enough or do people run a double cup? Tablets surely don't weigh enough these days to warrant anything more than the single, but though I'd throw the question out there.

Also, what length arm are people using for the RAM mounts? 6" or 9" or one of the special swivel arms?

I have the screw in dash mount in my hiace with the 9" arm. Hardly moves at all.
Just bought the single cup to use in the Prado. Will see how it goes this weekend.
The double suction cup is super expensive

The only time I have trouble with my Numi AX10 10.1" tablet is when you are going through very thick forrest / bush

I've had that issue with stand alone GPS units in rainforests, if its dense enough I doubt any satelite based systems would work.

1 vote for dedicated off road GPS

I had a look at my friends iPad with 4wd maps, Hema Navigator HN7, and VMS 700HDX. In the end I got VMS Touring 700HD X Outback Adventure Pack I from GPSOZ (http://www.gpsoz.com.au). It came with many maps e.g. in 1:25k scale NSW, Vic, Qld, and WA Topo maps, Camps7, Hema maps, Gregory's touring maps etc. I used to have VMS500 and was happy with it so together with the new unit thorough and detailed map coverage it helped me make the decision. Simple, easy to use, works well and having a dedicated off-road GPS for me is a good solution (for on road I use Prado VX own GPS unit which also covers some fire trails).

Tested the new Ram mount in the Prado on the weekend. Didn't move at all 👍
