  • Extra Warranty

apparently toyota have deals on "extra" warranty at the moment. What are peoples thoughts on extra warranty? Worth it?

I had Toyota send me an email asking if i might be interested in extended warranty for a new prado to be delivered mid Nov. I responded asking for a comparison between the standard and the extra warranty, no response yet.

    Hi Wil.
I took the offer for Toyota extended warranty on a second hand Prado it cost $1350 for an extra 3 years up to 150k.
It has paid for itself already in repairs.

I believe its a good investment if you can get it for the right price.

      Hi Wil,

I just bought a brand new 2014 under a novated lease and was offered an extra 3 years + 100,000km (which makes the total warranty 6 years, 200,000km). However, the warranty extension is being offered/covered by a third party through the leasing company and is going to cost me $20/mo extra over the 5 year term of the lease.

Be aware that in my experience usually manufacturer extended warranties require you keep servicing your vehicle at a Toyota dealership. As far as I'm concerned after the 60,000 kms of capped servicing there is NO WAY i'm taking my Prado anywhere near a Toyota service centre... (I've had the same mechanic for nearly 20 years and plan to stick with him).

Basically make sure you understand what you're getting yourself in to! The $20/mo I'm paying only adds up to $1200 in total. Always shop around.

I have the extra warranty, the Toyota one. But, the Toyota one is financed via a financial institution. But its still Toyota's own warranty. Available with two mileages, and both an extra three years. Dealers know it has the extra warranty, as it registers on their database. or so I am told.

It does increase resale, if the warranty still applies.

As far as servicing goes, your extended Factory warranty will still apply if you service it elsewhere. But - you do have to service it.

The third party insurance ones do require a dealership service - typically at the dealership that sold the third party policy.

Mine also includes hire car, accommodation and stuff like that, and tow expenses. But they seem fairly minimal - a couple of days, and a few hundred dollars.

But should something go wrong, then it would be worth it.

I am still going to add a transmission oil cooler, and a catch can. Those wouldn't violate the warranty, because they improve things. Not sure though if I raise the vehicle - I guess then, I'd be violating various things. But not the motor or gearbox but maybe the drivetrain. IMO its the gearbox and engine which really count, as well I guess as the diffs. I am not sure if raising the vehicle will effect front and rear differential warranties.

Buy it, its worth the $$$. I bought it directly from Toyota for $895 3yr, 150,000 after the dealer would only offer & sell me their third party extended warranty for $1295.00. From reading threads on this site, its will pay for itself if required.

I'm contemplating this as well, dealer is offering extra 3yrs/50,000km on top of standard, its supposed to be the Toyota Extra Care Extended Factory Warranty, only thing is that they are quoting $1950!!

I think the likely buy price for a dealer, is $500 for the high mileage version. Hence if the dealer is wanting $1,295, then they can make $800 profit, less their time of course!!

If one want sell the vehicle within its warranty period - ie for a new vehicle, 6 years - and one is not going to sell the vehicle before three years - then yes, it must be worth it IMO. Because IMO, a factory warranty removes a huge fear factor from a sale. IMO, a factory warranty pushes the sale price much closer to a dealer price. The major benefit that a dealer can offer, is choice of models, a trade in, selling skills to get you to spend more, an immaculately presented vehicle, and the ability to arrange finance. And also I guess, promise things such as upgrades or whatever.

But for most buyers who want to avoid dealer prices, then the warranty assures them that they're not buying a problem or a lemon.

I've go to say though, that I bought such a warranty in 1996 for i think $1,350, for my GXL Prado 90 series auto. I had not owned a 4WD before, and used to get a new car every three years. I asked my best friend - a car nut - and he said it was just comfort factor and not worth it. I bought it because I was unsure if the 4WD would suit me.

Clearly I wasted the money, because I still own the 90 series. And the first failure (besides lights, shockers, batteries, tyres (90k for each set) was the starter motor, which was replaced for $320. So I wasted my money ...

With the diesel though, and the impression to me that contemporary vehicles a built cheap, maybe its worth buying the insurance if one is going to sell 3 to 6 years from now. And also if the vehicle breaks something in that period, you won't have a repair bill. The reality though with a new 150 series, is that IMO. all the bugs are out of them. They are likely bulletproof.

I am not sure if injectors would be covered by such a warranty. I haven't checked mine.

These days, companies make money from wearable items. Take the DSG gearboxes. Mercedes and VW, charge around $700 for the tranny fluid - a small quantity of the stuff, every 60k or so. If you put in a third party fluid, you've blown any warranty and likely the gearbox. And the Germans do that sort of thing all the time.

I don't think Toyota do that sort of thing, yet. They do service the cars more often though, and get you to change the oil. But IMO, that's good for the life of the vehicle. The Germans don't care about long life IMO, so they let you go to 20,000km lots of the time. Long term warranties can be quite costly for German vehicles too. For instance, I think the Audi Q3, you can extent the warranty from three years, to 7 years, and up to a maximum mileage of 160,000km. The cost for doing so for the diesel Q3 - a vehicle that cost about $55k - was around $1,350 per year. I understand now though, that its gone up to $2k a year. I may be wrong on that though.

In comparison, Toyota's warranty is good value. But then, they are reliable, and not expensive to fix, unless the injectors go and damage a motor, or you do a large drivetrain. But IMO such failures in today's 150 are highly unlikely.

Injectors are covered, main reason why I purchased it. From reading on this site about the issues with the 120s, and not much info about the 150s injectors, I figured it works out at around $150.00 a year was bloody good insurance.

Ps if anyone wants a copy of the Extended Warranty policy to read over, I am more than happy to email it across.

Yeah thats what I planned, think they have added a fairly high "dealer" premium.

To be fair though: it's probably a consequence of you driving such a hard bargain!!

Be careful if the dealer does it though. With me, I went to a room for the Toyota insurance, to a guy who just did such policies, and handed me papers to sign after fiddling with his computer for 10 minutes. He was deliberately wasting time. A pure tactic. But he nonetheless drove me crazy, despite me knowing what was really going on.

I still had to arrange my insurance cover note, and go. And when he pushed across something to sign, it was not the Toyota insurance - it was one of those ones which only partial cover, and where you have to service your vehicle at the one dealer. And it cost a whole lot more than what had been agreed to ... so be careful, and read everything. Give yourself time, and don't get forced into anything.

Another way to get a better price, is to get "cold feet".

And get miserable ... you've heard about the injector issues, so you don't want the vehicle anymore. That Holden Colorado will do better, and save you a fortune etc etc

Important to remember that you need to give the salesman a win - ie for him (or her) to keep the sale - by giving you a zero margin longest mileage factory warranty cover. The sales win is not getting a margin on the cover - its using a zero margin cover to get the sale after you got cold feet.

If there's no "win" in it for the sales guy, then his management will not approve a give away warranty cover deal. They will though if they think your are going elsewhere.

Just got off the phone with Toyota Extra Care, same price $1950 for 3 years/$50,000km extra warranty. Considering after the factory warranty I can get parts for trade and do the work in my brothers workshop it may not be worth it?

I had the extended warranty with our 120 series as part of the new car deal.
It was 5 years, the car had to be log book services by a qualified mechanic, back to Toyota to fix warranty items.
They fixed things when needed, not that much went wrong anyway.
Would get it again if we gat a new car for peace of mind, what's another $1000 if you are spending $60,000+
