  • GPS upgrade with speed camera

    Hi All,
A newbie here,I just bought a 150 series VX Prado 2011 ( Used) and trying to get around with all the features this car have, looking at the GPS ,is this comes with speed cameras alerts? I may be looking at the wrong place but!! If not , can we upgrade the GPS so we can have the features of speed /red camera detection .Also can we zoom it to like a 3D/2D,same as those GPS in the market . Maybe later on I will be adding a Hema maps if possible.
    Thanks

If it's the factory GPS it doesn't have speed camera or red light camera alerts, no 3d/2D, and you can't add Hema maps to it. Would need to see a picture to be sure though as there's some after-market ones that can also be fitted.

      HI Fido,
Thanks for the reply, Yes it is the OEM navigation,Is there any upgrade for the GPS? mine is a 2011 model. Also inside the glove box is a card holder, anything to do with navigation system?
      Cheers

        Hi Ceasar,
Whilst you can update the DVD for the SatNav (which is located under the passenger seat), this just adds newer roads and freeways - it doesn't add any functionality like speed cameras. Unfortunately, the OEM unit is quite limited in its Sat Nav functionality, and this cannot be upgraded. The upgrade disks are quite expensive too.

The card holder in the glovebox doesn't do anything. It literally just holds cards (like fuel cards, or business cards). There is a suggestion from others that the space is used for something more practical overseas. It can be removed and the space used for installation of UHF radios (or in my case, extra power sockets for my dashcam) - I recently posted some instructions for removing it (which is not hard, but requires the glovebox to be removed).

Thanks for the info Prado.I'm just about to install a UHF radio over the weekend but not sure if my Kenwood will fit in replacing the card holder.
I probably buy an el cheapo gps that sound alert for speed camera/or DVR camera with GPS alert whichever cheaper.

The 'card-holder' space probably only suits UHF radios with remote headunits or where the buttons/display are on the handheld PTT (Push to Talk). The space behind the card holder is quite large - the fascia is only 40x100, but one removed, the area behind is much larger - at least 150 wide, probably 60 high and about 180 deep.

You can see my post for how to remove the card-holder here: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post485802

And a better photo of the available space here: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post486645

Been reading through the manual for the GPS / head unit, does not have much info on the model or manufacturer. The unit seems to be FujitsuTEN. I was wondering how often the speed camera database gets updated? The Navigation software says "iGO", but the SD card that came with the vehicle is "WhereiS", so I assume it is only updated annually as per previous models. It's quite an impressive unit, I particularly like being able to look up an address on the computer at home or mobile phone, then send it to the car through the Toyota Link APP. It will be interesting to see what other APPS Toyota come up with, apart from Fuel & Weather?

                  JJT,
I really like the unit as well as you can have 2 maps in a screen but I think its a bit outdated unlike 2D/3D maps , but speed camera is important to me , not that I speed up (too old for that ) but sometimes you miss the sign specially with the wife talking non stop on the passenger side. Victorians ( I'm from Sydney) are prone to speed camera as every over bridge have one (but not all). As you mention Toyota Apps, have you try it yet ? Where did you get that Apps , Android or Apple?
                  Thanks

It has 3D maps as an option, the Toyota Link app is android or IOS (play store or itunes), the fuel & weather apps were preloaded on the unit.

Red-light cameras are intended to improve road safety by making drivers think twice about breaking road rules. Somehow, it is a good idea, but many believe that the purpose of the device is to make cash for a city. However, two devices were invented that use comparable technology to make red-light camera photos useless to law enforcement. One of the gadgets can be bought now, while the other is still raising money to get UL certification. Here is the article: Red-light Cameras.

If you've got an iPhone just download the free Trapster software. It's crowd sourced red light and hot spot gps. It directions though.
