  • Rust under rear carpet

    Hi,

Unfortunately my prado cargo area gets used to transport wet animals from time to time and the rubber floor mat appears to have not really been doing as good a job as I gave it credit for.

I've lifted up the carper the other day and found significant rust on the cargo barrier mount on the left hand side and a small amount of surface rust on the body floor.

I ended up spraying the sh1t out of it all with inox (synthetic lanolin). Has anyone else had similar issues / any advice?

I intend on replacing the affected mount and bolts, but is it possible to just purchase 1 cargo barrier mount?

    Thanks.

It is the cargo barrier mount. There are two of them located in the floor of the cargo area.

Hi cbm8880, love my Prado except the design of the rear door and especially the seal. I have found that the factory put some sort of greasy muck on the inside lip of the meeting of door skin and seal to attempt to keep water out. Don't think it works too well. Not saying that is what is causing your problem, maybe just something to check??

          Thanks hum,
My seal is nicked in places, but generally ok for keeping a good seal I think. Have you replaced yours? With Toyota or are there aftermarket ones available?
Most of my water comes from wet things in the back (not on my watch), and I think I just have to sort this out and get an additional liner in the back with higher raised edges. The. Toyota one simply directs the water towards the edges and the cargo barrier mounts. It's a pretty poor design,

I would assume the wet animals are dogs, are you sure one of them hasn't peed in the back. Dog pee is very very bad for paint, and would explain what you have going on. The best solution short of getting rid of the animals (which i wouldn't do either) would be some sort of high sided mat and take a towel or two with you and dry them off before they get into the car. Unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem you already have, which sucks a little, and short of replacing and repainting parts, nothing will.

Yeah it's the dogs post swimming. There have been a couple of vomiting episodes (sea water) and just residual water after towelling of. The high sided liner option is a good idea. I'm also ordering some new mountings for the cargo barrier as the actual vehicle skin itself just appears to have very mild surface rust.

Ah, that would explain it. We always try and keep ours out of the water for 15mins before loading them in the car, lets them cough up anything they are going to (like the 5lts of water they swallowed trying to get the tennis ball ) and helps them dry out a little. I use one of the canvas slings that cover the middle row seat for our dogs. It is water proof and contains the hair very well, however a big spill would just run out everywhere. Ours are very used to the car and have never peed, shit, vomited in the car, so that's a good thing.

Hi cbm, I haven't replaced the door seal as the car has only done 20k. Just had it serviced by the local dealer. Service manager said he would get the shop to apply some sikaflex sealant. Looks like a job for me! Did have a problem of outback red dust getting into the little breather holes that are made in the seal. Last trip I plugged them with garden drip plugs. The fine dust can find its way in and then turn to mud when you wash it or it rains. It then blocks up and drips out for the next few months. Sounds like this is different to your problem. Good luck.
