Drl's don't make any difference to me , I use my eyes to see other vehicles , I don't text and no longer use the phone while moving , Bluetooth or otherwise . That way I'm concentrating on all the other dipshits that do . This way I can see all the European car drivers that are texting and thinking they are ok because everyone else can see them coming with their Drl's and will avoid them . To me they are the same as having a baby on board sticker on the back of your car .

Dont kid yourself thinking running around with your headlights on is all they say its cracked up to be.
Motorbikes have been doing it for years but they still get taken out just as often as before the rule change.
Yes it might save you from some minor bingles. But the lights on wont stop the major crashes, because they are usually caused by the idiot not even looking when pulling out or not seeing the red light in the first place.
So if someone is paying attention they will see you coming with your lights on,buts its the ones that are not paying attention that cause the crashes.

I lived in Europe for a number of years where it was mandatory to drive with headlights 24/7. Since all cars I had automatically turned on/off the lights when you started/stopped the motor, it didn't bother me. When I got back here, I certainly noticed how I just couldn't see some cars. And this wasn't just on-coming cars as well - the rear lights also help me to spot traffic on the road.

I currently have a loaner from a friend (a Hyundai) which has a similar auto on feature, so I leave that on. As some people have said, It's a good safety feature. of course there is always some goose nearby who isn't paying attention to the traffic. but if it helps some notice me and my family on the road, I'll go with safety any time.

In the 2014 GXL Auto, just make sure you turn the engine off in any shift position other than Park. That way all the electronics will keep running. You can shift in to park as soon as you've done this. I was really annoyed at this too at first and stumbled upon the procedure in the user manual.

Daytime running lights are not mandatory in Australia. Australian Design Rule ADR 76/00 sets out requirements for optional lamps. ADR 76/00 calls up ECE Regulation 87.

Numerous studies of the effectiveness of daytime running lights have been conducted over the last three decades. Paine(1) found that according to European studies the potential savings from DRLs are

              · 25% of daytime multi-vehicle fatal crashes

              · 28% of daytime fatal pedestrian crashes

              · 20% of daytime multi-vehicle injury crashes

              · 12% of daytime multi-vehicle property crashes.

The largest savings from daytime running lights would be in high severity crashes, including head-on and intersection crashes.

A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) noted that it was uncertain how well findings like these would apply in lower latitude countries, but that it was likely they would prevent 5-10% of daytime multiple vehicle crashes. A study by General Motors in the US of the effects of DRLs on several passenger car makes showed a reduction in relevant multiple vehicle crashes in excess of 5% and a reduction in vehicle-to-pedestrian crashes of about 9%. A study by ARRB concluded that Swedish findings of a reduction of 13% in multiple vehicle crashes would be applicable in Australia.

Based on RTA crash data for 2000 Paine concluded that full implementation of DRL in Australia would save:

              · Between 3% and 11% of non-pedestrian fatal crashes

              · Between 4% and 11% of non-pedestrian non-fatal crashes

              · Between 4% and 12% of all pedestrian fatalities.

There is potential for a significant safety advantage in fitting daytime running lights and few disadvantages. Paine estimates that daytime running lights would cost about $50 fitted on the production line as original equipment and $200 retrofitted. He estimated ongoing costs for dedicated DRL at a possible $7 per year for bulb replacement and the additional fuel used through more activation of the alternator to charge the battery.

Yes have read that material for proper LED DRL - still doesn't address the question of why Toyota used headlights on GXL rather than
proper DRL's. Should not have used headlights, with the resultant dash board light issues and other annoying factors, rather Toyota should have done the job correctly in the first place.

Well, Toyota are not the only ones to use headlights, LED DRL's are a recent innovation, that acrs link does not specifically reference LED DRLs:

Daytime running lights are forward facing white lights that allow vehicles to be seen better in daylight. There are several forms (low beam headlights, dimmed high beam headlights or a dedicated light with a defined beam pattern and light intensity) but all are wired so that they are on when the engine is running. Increased intensity turn signals have also been used. Daytime running lights that do not use normal headlights must be deactivated whenever normal headlights come on.
Lights on the front of a car in daylight are proven to reduce prangs whether they are LED DRL's or not.

Your forgetting that the vast majority of fatal crashes are single vehicle and rural... (For the uninformed, animal and fatigue, and I should know. My wife's 17yo sister would still be with us having succumbed to this very statistic earlier this year 😢

                      Nothing to do with lights.

You can't stop a DUI causing carnage with lights, but you can keep the honest people safer and more alert, and it cost nothing.

When your "not paying attention" a bright set of lights might just catch your attention!

I dont see the problem here either, although I only use headlights on open roads or poor visibility, I have on several occasions considered the addition of a DRL kit for the headlights on my 120. Yes they are not the be all and end all but along with all other safety features, they are designed as a safety aid. SRS systems were all in this same boat when first launched in mainstream manufacture. These lights are not doing any harm to vehicle, driver or environment sojust go with the flow.

As common sense is not very common any more due to a multitude of reasons it would be foolish to simply try and rely on it alone, there is at least a whole generation of people out there that have no clue..... unfortunately they do live among us.

Yeah stats are always against me :-)
I am not against DRL, I bought AMTS lights so i can be seen better myself.
I have been a bike rider most of my life running headlights full time and it felt like nobody ever saw them.
I am now an incomplete paraplegic because someone did not see me coming down the road and T boned me.
I hope the stats are true and not done buy some nob in a government department that also says speed cameras saves lives there not there for revenue.

Having driven emergency vehicles for years in the UK before moving here, let me assure you all that an awful lot of motorists, motorcyclists, pedal cyclists and pedestrians will not see you, regardless of how many lights you have visible. We generally had between 15 and 20 separate lights showing and/or flashing to the front along of course with the noise generators too, and many times have had to stand really heavy on the brakes because someone hasn't seen us and turns or crosses in front of us. Not to mention the retards that fail to yield anyway, but that's a separate issue.

DRLs do make you more visible so may just let you be seen by one person that isn't completely asleep.

Why not have your lights on during the day? A lot of times I see people with no lights on at all in the morning when it is still a bit dark!!!
Use just common sense and have your lights on, because it is a fact people can see you better with lights on than without even during a sunny day.
In Germany you must have your lights on during the day.
