I don't believe it has been changed. Section 217. Page 228. "Current as at 1 October 2014".

LED's or headlights, doesn't much matter, it improves the chances of other people noticing other vehicles, especially grey coloured cars. They are the worst! Blends into the road and people who don't properly stop and look at an intersection roll out straight in front of grey cars.
I found while driving on the flat outback highways that LED's are more visible at a distance. It's unnatural focused whiteness is more noticeable than the yellow-white of headlights.
It would be good to get a hold of a wiring diagram to somehow rewire headlight drl to dedicated LED drl's.

People notice you when you creep up from behind with your lights on, usually wakes them up to pay attention to what they are doing next like making turn and indicating properly etc, if they don't know you are there you get the sudden manoeuvre that sees you hitting the brakes to an incident.

I agree this is something from the nanny state.
I have eyes, a brain, can manipulate the control stalk with a simple flick of the wrist. I know when to turn my lights on - and I do when appropriate. I also like to have the option of turning the things off (and not just putting on parking lights - that dims the dash lights / reverse camera) when doing things like reversing the boat down the ramp at night so not to dazzle others with the headlights, or if I simply want to be "stealthy".
I think a legitimate question to see if anyone has developed a work around for this, I don't think others expressing an opinion that "is safety and should be on all cars" is helpful. I think we all understand reasons for using headlights, and the option to turn them off legitimate.
Would be really happy to hear from others that have been able to turn off.
I am thinking a relay on each low beam headlight positive wire, normally open, closed when picks up current from the instrument lights - that way the normal on DRLs would be the parkers only, audio . reverse camera on full illumination. First click to parkers same, with dimmed internals, ability to turn on fog lights. Full headlight click would light up headlights as normal. In this instance would change the front parkers to Cree LEDs, so brighter than normal and would have real DRL look (like the Kakadoo).
But if there is a simple wire link from I guess the ECU to the lights relay that someone knows of, then I would use that (with relay in line to over ride).
                Any thoughts?

                  My thoughts.

I used to be on the band-wagon and complained I couldnt turn off my lights etc.... but I got over it and now I don't even notice them on during the day.

Its funny how drivers that have this option hates it, but drivers without them are fitting after-market DRLS and the likes on their cars.

I too have a large boat and go out to boat ramps at 5:30am. For the other drivers that get dazzled by my lights when I reverse my boat down the ramp, I say don't look directly at my lights and there is no damager as the the driver is usually just sitting there in Park waiting their turn on the ramp. Going "stealth" mode on a boat ramp is not a good thing when you may have someone backing in a 7mt boat and cant see you at the bottom of the ramp! And I'm sure most drivers would think differently of you for doing it.

I have changed my parkers from globes to LED's/SMD's and also now have whiter driving lights that look more appealing then to the factory yellow lights.

I drive FWY's very often and I see many drivers at dusk/night with lights off. Sometimes they forget to flick the switch that extra notch or they are old or just don't understand and are not paying attention. Say that, if this become the norm (light on all the time) which I can see will happen it will make for a safer driving experience for that forgetful driver but mostly for me as I can now see them.

                  Cheers

Don't understand. Why would anyone be unhappy about headlights (that you can't see) being on all the time???

                      Yeah I agree.

Aside from that, last Friday was the first wet rainy, foggy overcast day we have had around here for a long time, clearly a large portion of the population don't have a good grasp on when its appropriate to turn on headlights based on what I saw on Friday, so this feature eliminates that issue.

                      Cheers Andrew

I just read the fine print on the latest headlight bulbs fitted to my Prado last week. "Reduced life span if used continuously" the label declares. So that's why I only got about 4 years out of them. I run headlights all the time.

Four years? That'd be awesome! About every 12months I start to get the flicker or reduced output. Usually results in me changing not only my bulbs but also the wiring... wait a minute... i wonder if me continually futzing around with something that ain't broke has anything to do with it?... nah... impossible.

My car is just over 6 years old. I still have all the original bulbs in all lights. Except for the headlight bulbs which are relegated to emergency spares. Considering the off road use my car gets that pretty good going. My sons BF Falcon goes through bulbs almost monthly. And the amount of late model cars with faulty tail/brake lights never ceases to amaze me.

Agree with the tail light failures on some modern cars.

My wife's car used to blow it's brake lights every few months until I replaced them with LEDs. I think it must be something to do with poor voltage regulation or very noisy wiring.

Another plus to the 150 then which has had LED rear tail/brake lights since inception. Although some one on here will probably hate it because you can't change the 'bulb(s)' yourself.

Also the owner of my neighbouring business just changed cars from the XLT Ranger to Altitude Prado and couldn't care less about the lights. Also reckons the Prado is vastly superior in quality and design, despite the Ranger being the best ute getting around.
