  • Headlights on during day - Annoying and Ridiculous!

The latest GXL Prado has headlights on all the time - automatic which cannot be overridden. Toyota will not allow this to be deactivated. It is not a legal requirement, just a standard guiding the brightness, dimensions and positioning of LED DRL's. Hopefully this will not become so, federal parliament is aware of issue and so far is resisting any compulsion. If enough complain ( and plenty are not happy ) the setting may be adjustable to have the option of disconnecting this ridiculous feature. It appears Toyota took the cheap option of DRL's by activating standard headlights on GXL rather than installing proper LED DRL's which only activate front lights and do not affect dash board lights. Very disappointed that Toyota treated it this way. Where will all this end when every car is fitted with DRL's - flashing lights on top? About time drivers and pedestrians took some responsibility and were aware of there surroundings! What about motor cycles that have a need for headlights on to make them stand out - is their safety now compromised as , more and more models have headlights operating during the day? Bring back common sense and stop this nanny state mentality. We should be free to choose when to turn head lights on during day light - when it is obvious during bad weather, fog, dust etc.

I am interested to hear other comments - for or against.

I think it is a good idea and should be made mandatory for all new cars. I plan to fit DRL to my Prado as soon as I can find something suitable.

Thank you. What about headlights being used instead of proper LED DRL's?

How can their safety be compromised with headlights on?

DRL's are good. You don't need headlights on during the day. Unless in the country. I always put ours on on a long drive

They won't stand out as much if headlights on cars becomes the norm during daylight.

I indicated my disappointment to Toyota. There was nothing said about the lights always being on when I test drove it and nothing in their promotional info. The PR guy phoned me and explained lots of people aren't pleased with it. It would be ok if they turned on by default however you had the option to turn them off.
Another irritating thing is how your calls are dropped by bluetooth when you turn the ignition off.

Yes. Agree. I also have expressed disappointment and have been informed others are not happy. I was given an indication prior to accepting vehicle that it may be something the Workshop could sort out. As we now know - they could not. I am hoping that with enough adverse comment they may rectify situation.

We use our useless arb fog lights for daytime running. All cars should have DRL fitted. Particularly on shaded road and gravel. I don't understand the complaints here. I too plan to fit DRL on my car soon.

IMO when it comes to safety, anything that will keep my family or anyone else's from an accident or being another statistic, I'm all for it.

I changed my TJM fogs for Narva DRLs and will do the same on the Cute. Great initiative in my opinion. When we get used to all vehicles with lights on during the day we can then go for high viz stripes...

Wrong. It's not about one car standing out, it's about one driver noticing on coming traffic to avoid a collision.

You always notice a pair of headlights day or night when making a move that will cross the path of another vehicle. Whether there are 5 or 50 is irrelevant, the fact they are visible means you know they are there, mission accomplished.

After six months of driving I don't even noticed mine are on, can't remember, don't think about it, doesn't bother me. But I am glad that I have not had anyone pull out in front of me, cut me off or forget I was there, and I have a dark grey car, the worst colour for visibility.

Some LED are good, like the land rover and VW, BMW ones. They are large, and have distinctive patterns. Others like the LC200 ones and some Nissan ones are small and can be lost in the glare of the sun on the corner of some panels, therefore not standing out but actually blending in with the über bright sun glare.

Headlights on the other hand are so much bigger and throw out a large light spread which always catches your eye. And the colour is generally rather unnatural so you tend to notice it at a glance.

Agree, my wife's outback has the light switch on full time, and we just click the instrument cluster brightness from day to night in lieu of the headlight switch. The cluster is backlit full time like the Prado anyway.

I used to flick my lights on in the patrol on long trips, but they had to be turned off at the other end, lucky there was an alarm when the drivers door opened with them on. So they weren't set and forget like the Subaru and Prado.
