  • Toyota OEM GPS drop in for factory fitted 2014 GX/GXL models

Currently browsing accessory options while awaiting delivery of a 2014 GX. Came across this Sydney based dealer offering a navigation module for the factory fitted head unit. Like that idea. Could not find any info here about this module. Any insight? For $1,099 it sounds half way between the Chinese GPS options and the costly high end units.

    Blurb reads:
This new Integrated Navigation System is now available for all 2014 model onwards Toyota’s that have the factory screen but are missing the navigation. The kit includes everything needed to Plug N’ Play a navigation solution using the latest iGO Primo software platform with NAVTEQ Australian maps. Compatible Models: Prado GX / GXL – 2014 Facelift Model (from Nov 2013 On)

Have seen that mentioned on here before but an iPad and Hema 4WD Maps app would cost you a lot less.

Probably right. For the last few years I have been using a Garmin phone with offline street and topo maps w/o problems.
The good point of an OEM plugin module, though, is that it doesn't clutter the dashboard and keeps the factory fitted unit intact. Maybe the OEM price will come down once ebay sellers realize it's potential. It seems to work with a lot of well selling Toyota models eg. Prado / Hilux / RAV 4 / Corolla / Kluger.

My wife has Toyota aftermarket GPS unit installed in her 2014 Kluger GXL and, as all Toyota dealers in NSW seem to be offering the same unit for both Prado and Kluger, it is likely we got what you are looking at. Price is similar.

The GPS works very well and she is happy with it. Good integration with Toyota for an aftermarket unit. It also came with Hema 4wd maps option. The road navigation software is the same as in the VMS Touring 700 HD GPS. You can find more information under www.advancedice.com.au and https://www.naviextras.com. I believe it is the iGo Street Navigation software.

The only issue for us is the location of the "black box" (important as it has the SD card with maps on it) and in our car it was mounted behind glovebox. To update maps we have to take the glovebox off and then also take off part of the dashboard to take it out ... .

SD card needs to be registered on your PC to update maps.

Best if you ask for the mounting to be in an easier to access location than ours. The empty space in the middle of 2014 Prado GX/GXL/VX dashboard could be a suitable location.

If you also want off road mapping option (with the Hema maps) then you need to specify it when you order it. Hema maps option uses a different black box than the GPS without Hema maps.

I recommend this product based on our experience but location of the black box is an important factor to consider when ordering.

There's a complete replacement unit with 9" screen on eBay for $900, comes with the front facia which is the top air vents and surround down to the climate control, specific for the 2014 model.

@Kapitan: Thanks for all the details. Sounds like a good GPS solution for the existing head unit. I like the idea of retaining the Toyota supplied unit instead of having to chase a third party should any of the non GPS related functions not work properly anymore. From the links given I figure the Hema maps add another $300 to the base price. http://advancedice.com.au/index.php/...with-hema.html Hmm, $1600 RRP incl. Hema maps is starting to look expensive.

@Symo: Are you pointing at the Extnix unit? http://www.extnix.com.au/extnix-toyo...inment-system/ $849
Is this a unit worth exploring? I'm hesitant to swap out the original head unit. Maybe then it is simpler and cheaper to stick a separate device (Android or IOS) in the existing console void.

Yeah that's it - but I don't know if its any good, every time I think I want to look at upgrading I find something better to spend the money on.

Pardon my ignorance but with the iPad, you would need one with a sim card correct? This would concern me as reception in some places can be pretty average.

                  Hi,

It's not the sIm you need but the GPS capability and only the Cellular model has this, thats why you have to buy the version with a sim.
