I have traction control - my opinion is that it is a good improvement over just having the LSD, but it is not as effective as a locker.
The main drawback of the traction control is that it uses the car's ABS, and if you get stuck in a situation where it is engaging a lot, you can be in danger of overheating your brakes.
Also, there is a slight delay before it engages (at least on the 120), whereas a locker (once activated) is always there, so the TC could possibly provide a disadvantage in some situations.
Having said all that, you'd probably be surprised how far traction control will get you - I know that a locker is a long way down my wish-list at the moment because of this..

Traction control is good, a locker is better.

The TC is a bonus as its always on so kicks in when didn't realise you would need help. But the locker is 100% but only when you select it so you might use that on your second attempt!

No reason you can't have both, once the locker is engaged that will negate the TC on that axle as you wont get wheel spin.

          Cheers Andrew

As mine is a gx prado 120 it had no traction control and it would basically get bogged as soon as it lifted a rear wheel so a locker was a necessity. I haven't looked back

Haha, I just watched those vids.. some good examples in there, but I gotta laugh at the "maths" that the host does at the end of Part 2 - he says that because the Grande is $20k more than the GXL, but the ARB lockers are only about $3k, then traction control costs $17k more than lockers and doesn't give you as good capability..
I'm pretty sure the extra $20k for the grande is for more than just the traction control (think leather, sat nav, adjustable suspension, etc, etc), and not to mention that traction control was available with Option Pack 1 for the GXL (but I don't know how much that option set you back)..

Yes you can fit a front locker as well, as for whether you need to well tat depends on where you drive. I have front and rear and the rear will get me through most things.

If money is no issue then get both, if money is a concern then get the rear first and see how you go, you can always add a front later.

                    rear locker v traction contol?

I'm getting a rear locker next month. Can't wait to see the difference.
And yeah even the sales staff said just get rear first. You might not need a front so don't spend your money if you don't need to.

I have a grande with TC, and a rear E-Locker. The TC is amazing, it goes a lot further than I expected it to! I have found that (as mentioned) in some spots where the car really was struggling for traction, the TC became slightly less effective after a short period - engage the locker and away you go. I was considering getting a front locker as well, but I have been more than happy with my current setup.

Our VX 120 has TC and also fitted a air locked to the rear. Having come from a twin locked 80 series to a hilux then two Prado's the TC is almost as good as the twin lockers with two disadvantages. 1. TC done not work well on deep crossings and my carpets can tell you the story. 2. TC needs slow walking pace to be at its best, but can work from standstill.
Air lockers have the advantages of been able to be turned off or work at any speed to allow for the slowest crawl, but the small disadvantage of turning sharp when engaged.
The airlocker in the rear has given so much more confidence particually when towing the trailer through water. Best $1000 spent so far.
