  • Vibration over 90km's

Hi everyone. I just purchased a 1999 Prado & so far its been great. I only have one problem, when you get over 90km's you get a high pitched vibration through the car. I have replaced the uni joints in the rear tail shaft, thinking that was the problem, but it's still there. I removed the front drive shaft to see if that was the problem, but it remained. The faster you go the worse it gets. It seems to be in the drive train somewhere but I cannot find it. I was wondering if anyone else has herd off or had the problem & how it was fixed. thanks.

have you had all wheels aligned and balanced first?

Iv just gone through this issue ... Turned out in my car the shocks were screwed! And caused the rear tyres to go out of round 40k old mickeys !
My steering wheel was dead still the whole time
Swap tires around put spare one ... I ended up swapping my rims and tires with a prado mate to confirm

Had wheel alignment done, tyres balanced & new universals in drive train. it doesn't seem to be a wheel balance problem. It is like a hum through the car at 90km's plus. Like its a high speed vibration. It also only gets really bad under load, when you back off, it seems to go away. I just put new tyres on the rear & replace the front with some near new ones I had, so I don't know if the tyres are the problem. I can swap them around to see. Thanks for the input

You said you removed the front driveshaft.... You would had to have had the center diff lock on, maybe put the front one in and take the rear shaft out and take it for a drive and see how that goes
          Process of elimination really

That was my next move Scottkz. I will do that today. I was talking to someone yesterday that said if the input bearing on the front diff is worn it can cause this problem. Some of them were tapered with shims, I'm not sure if this is the same. Makes sense, the diff centre is still spinning with the drive shaft off.

Another thing I didn't think of is the front axels & CV's. I did hear a tickling noise at one stage but didn't investigate.

Don't rule the the front components out but I would probly swing towards it lying in the rear or transfercase only because when you disconected the front shaft the vibration was still there under load

Drove to work on Monday, set the cruise control on 105k/h & noticed that when I corned the vibration went away until i straitened up again. I also took note that when I backed off, it didn't go away, it was just quieter. I am trying to get hold of another rear drive shaft to eliminate that. Apart from that, I'm still stuck.

Have you tried rotating the wheels/tyres? I've had a couple of tyres go out of round that couldn't be balanced 100%. They would cause vibration at highway speeds that was less (or went away) around corners and sweeping bends. Try swaping wheels front to back and see if it makes any difference.

Tried wheel rotation but no fix. I have a week off work so I an determined to track it down. I am still swaying towards the drive train. The vibration is a high pitched hum, liken something that is spinning a lot faster than the wheels is out of balance. I will remove the rear drive shaft & take it for a run, see if I can eliminate that. Apart from that, ,I'll keep pulling thins off until it goes.

A "high pitched hum" seems a bit unusual. I'd usually suspect bearings, brakes or loose materials, but those sound won't usually dampen when letting of the power.

Drive train seems the logical place. How much lift does it have? If too much it could be from the shaft angles.

Could it be something related to the transmission? Or even air intake?

Is it affected by RPM? (exhaust)

Finally had time again to play with the Prado. I have narrowed it down to the rear drive shaft. When removed & taken for a drive, the vibration disappeared. I remembered when I bought the car, the bloke said he had problem with the tail shaft & it looked like it had been removed lately. Then I noticed that the front & rear uni joints weren't lined up on the spline. When I replaced the uni's, I marked the drive shaft & put it back together without noticing. I checked a photo on the net to see how it should be aligned, then rotated the spline to match photo. The vibration is till there, but is nowhere near as bad & comes in around 110kms now. There is a place in town that balances drive shafts for $250. Might be worth it before it starts destroying the bearings in my diff & transfer case.

If you carefully clean the shafts you will find factory marks showing where they line up

Give it a good clean mate, found white paint pen marks but only on the main shaft, not on the spline end. Do you know if that are stamped marks or just paint pen?
