• Steering Specialist in Brisbane

Over time I've replaced all the rack bushes (twice), fitted new lower ball joints (upper joints have zero play), replaced the tie rod ends, had the rack reconditioned (including new inner ends), had the alignment done countless number of times. And I'm still not happy with the vagueness in the steering... so can anyone recommend a steering specialist in/around Brisbane that I can take the car to and have them diagnose what needs doing? Or to tell me that this is as good as it gets.

If you are on the limits of adjustment of the camber and caster due to the suspension lift it will induce the vagueness that you talk about, I'm not sure if this is such an issue with the 120's (someone else with 120 knowledge might assist) if it is installing adjustable upper control arms really does transform the steering back to how it should be.

Steve at Caboolture Steering in Aerodrome Dve..... I'm heading up there tomorrow to have my new Front Shocks installed on our 150. He's one of the last guys that I know of that actual did it as a Trade b4 those dopey people that make decisions about Trade qualifications decided that it was no longer required..... So, he's definitely qualified and doesn't just setup your geometry to factory specs but goes beyond that......
cheers..... Rob (macca)

If your looking for a good wheel alignment on the SS go see Jon at 'Keith 4 Wheels', Underwood. I've owned my Prado from new and haven't been happy with any wheel alignment until it was aligned there. Make sure you ask that Kiwi does the job. They have done my last three and also another PP's 150 and we are both happy.

No affiliation just finally found someone who know what they are doing.

I would be over the moon if another alignment sorted this out, but I am starting to suspect that the recon job on the rack was a bit of a waste of money. When I adjust the pre-load/tension on the rack, it improves (but doesn't completely cure) the vagueness right up to the point where the rack starts binding and it stops returning to centre. I might try one more go at the alignment, and then I need an actual steering specialist to take a look i.e. someone that understands all the components of steering.

Suspension lifts require a change to the Toyota alignment settings. Unless this is done the steering will be vague at straight ahead. City Suspension did not correct this in my 120. Accurate Suspension fixed it and steering is great.

So I had my steering aligned again... This time I went to Fulcrum Suspension as I'd heard good things. My toe adjustment was way out which they corrected, but they reckoned that everything else was ok. It did drive better but still not as well as I would like so I got under there and took another look myself. It looks like the left front wheel bearing is starting to go as there is a bit of movement in the wheel when I rock it back and forth at the top and bottom. I've had a hunt round the web for info on how hard it is to change myself but there isn't much out there on the 95 series (there is a bit on the 120 and 150 but they have a different type of bearing setup). Anyone with any info on this job i.e. what parts and tools are needed?
I also found quite a lot of play in the rack itself. The play isn't in the rack ends but rather in the rack itself. I'll try to post up a vid... Can this be recon'd or do I need a new rack? I ask because this rack has been recon'd before but I was never happy with it.

The clunking sound isn't the rack btw.

Looks like a fair bit of slack there.
Could be that the gear teeth on the rack or pinion are worn.
Q. did you have the steering wheel secured when demonstrating that movement?
Cheers

No, the steering wheel was not secured. The farside wheel was on the ground, and the nearside wheel was being pulled back and forth. Might be time for a new rack.
