  • Anyone installed air tanks?

I've recently mounted and ARB compressor with the AMTS Compressor Bracket and was wondering if anyone has mounted air tanks? Keen to find out what others have done as I don't like having to pop the bonnet every time I need to use the compressor (and draping the compressor hose over the side)... I'm looking at mounting hotdog tanks along the chassis rail (passenger side) or perhaps a bigger tank between the sub fuel tank and the towbar...

This has been discussed a number of times, have a search but if I recall correctly the general view is tanks aren't worth the effort. Take time to fill, don't hold much air anyway, etc. Alternative is to fit a tee piece and run an air line front and rear to a coupler. On the bar or the rear bumper. Switch the compressor from the cabin and Robert is your fathers brother. Or your mothers.

Yep I had an air tank, got rid of it as I found it worthless. As MJ said just run an airline out if lifting the bonnet is the main issue.

Yes, I have a 10 ltr tank mounted between rear tank and towbar.
Easy to fit and fulfills the purpose I needed it for very well.

Thanks for the feedback guys A 10L tank is a fairly decent size... I have a couple of air compressors for work (the kind you plug into 240V power). Haven't played with them for a while but they have 20L tanks. I might have a go at inflating tyres with those when they're compressed to 100 PSI and see how often the motors kick in to try and get a rough idea of whether I'd benefit from having a tank or not...

Already ordered a switch for the cabin Thanks for the suggestion MJ. If I do go without a tank, it'll just be a single connector on the tow bar or near the side rails. I carry a 10M hose.

Piggy - can I trouble you to tell me what sort it is and how you've mounted it there? Thanks

Generic brand. See them heaps on eBay, mounted using original holes and a piece of 50 x 3 flat bar with two 30 degree bends each end. Then 3 stainless hose clamps around tank.
1/2" air line run to front thru chassis rail for protection.

When I had the rock sliders made they were fabricated as air tanks. Total capacity approx 10 litre plus. Compressor from AoB mounted in the void on the left side behind the trim panel next to the third row of seats.

Hmm. Novel way of killing two birds with one stone! Were they custom sliders?

Yes, custom sliders as where they were welded together they were drilled to make a complete vessel each side. Had fittings welded in to join the left and right sides with a piece of air hose and to the compressor and to the Nitto fitting mounted on the towbar.

I recently worked on a set of sliders that had been set up for air although never used for such, apart from it being illegal the way these ones were done it was also IMO highly dangerous. Compressed air tanks are not something just anyone could or should make.

I made mine that I fitted to the other P, in aluminium. But then I did design it to AS, weld it to AS, and hydrostatically test it to AS. For some reason the same size as a winch and it sat in the winch space in the bar. Quite a coincidence that.

So why were these others illegal AJ?

Pressure vessels need to be certified that they meet the relevant standard, these weren't. They were also made from seemed tubing which would never pass the standard.

A local engineering firm here was doing something similar many years ago, when the authorities caught on they got in whole heap of trouble and copped some very heavy penalties. I haven't read up on pressure vessel rules lately but I bet they haven't lowered the safety standards

Seamed pipe per se isn't an issue it depends all on the grade of material. We use seamed pipe for steam at lots of C and lots of kPa. For commercial sales the tanks would need to be tested and design verified. Not sure about private use. I designed mine to a more stringent standard than is required since I am more familiar with the high temp high pressure stuff. Might drag out the appropriate standard and see what it says. Or not.

In this case it was RHS tubing, not pipe. I cut, ground, welded and drilled it and I would say it ordinary everyday RHS, I doubt it would even be available in a grade suitable.

It was also a commercially sold set, not a DIY job so selling them as an uncertified pressure vessel made from unsuitable materials would get you in hot water if one ever failed.

If anyone is interested then google compressor tank failures, they can cause a lot of serious damage when they go bang.
