  • warping front discs any one have a fix?

Iam onto my 4th set of discs, i have been through sets of toyota's & 2 sets of DBS slotted discs

All sets get extremely warped after a couple of years or is this just what I have to expect?

Sound like your wheel nuts are too tight, this is a common cause for warped disks, unless of course you are driving through water with real hot disks. The correct torque for the wheel nuts is around 110Nm. It certainly makes it much easier to get the nuts back off. When I first got the car I used to do them up way too tight, my disks were warped, I had them machined which helped for a little while but the pulsing came back. When I changed the disks I checked the correct toque and have never had a problem again.

      X2.

Or/also Try on car machining, it's your best chance. Once you have DTV it just gets worse. If you can get runout well within spec it won't occur.
Unless your nuts are too tight

i also have this issue, without a genuine fix. I think the water on hot discs is an issue. Sounds like common sense but going into a water crossing or even a car was give some of the components of your vehicle to cool down a little?

I take care with trying cool down before taking a dip. I have usually noticed ages after I had been out 4x4ing, so didn't think it was directly related to anything I did out on the tracks.

I didn't realize you had to be so sensitive about how tight your nuts are. I usually make sure I can take them off with the standard in car wrench, especially if I have had some work done involving air guns, as I have caught out before on the side of the road where I can't get my nuts off.

Since I have buy some new disks any way I will be even more careful with how my nuts are set.

Thanks every one for the great advice.

Glad I dropped in here. I have a full set of new rotors - slotted and drilled ready to fit with new pads. Will check that the wheel nuts are not over torqued now.
            Thanks guys.

I would have just said don't brake so hard. Only ever warped one set of discs in my life but that was from heavy hard braking constantly. But then again your nuts might be to tight

Wow.... Surely it's just metal on metal now. I've never heard of any brakes lasting that long.

2003 GXL. Front pads at 180,000 and still more left on them and the rears just done at 204,000.
Discs didn't need skimming as all ok. Towed a 2. 1/2 tonne van for at least half of that distance.

Is there a middle peddle ????

                        :-)

They are down to about 3mm now so am going to change them over very soon before we go on holidays with the caravan. It's a manual with lots of highway driving so that's why. Plus we use the gears to slow down a lot as per normal manual driving. The 210,000k includes off roading as well as towing our tandem 2T+ caravan for about 30,000k of that.

I have the same problem. Had my rotors skimmed, and it was a lot better, but not fully fixed. Could it be the rear that has a wobble in them too? What are the best rotors to replace them with?

My last lot were a set of "DBA Street Series T2 Slotted Brake Rotor Suit Front Toyota Prado 120 Series".

I am searching the net for my next pair and probably go for the same and Bendix Pads.

To tell if the front or rear are warped, front will make the steering shake under brakes, rear you will feel like the brakes are off - on a little causing what feels like a surge like the brakes are only working on half the rotation.

Agree with using a torque wrench to tighten wheel nuts. Have been using 85 ft/lb (115 nm) forever and use never seize on the thread and between the washer and wheel nut ( not between the washer and mag wheel). And on taper wheel nuts a little on the taper to stop binding.

If you don't have a torque wrench it is the best insurance you can have to prevent stud failures.
