  • Speed cameras on Sunshine Coast beaches

    http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/...23/4092961.htm

I would have thought that a police 4WD with an officer holding a hair dryer would be a better deterrent to stop speeding on the beaches. Having a covert camera won't stop the offender immediately until the driver gets the fine in the mail.

They're not really concerned with stamping out the behavior, more with taxation by stealth. How many times have we seen a mobile police vehicle and immediately checked our speed etc? As you said, parking by the side of the road has little or no immediate effect.

Having a conversation with a live constable face to face or eyeballing them from the adjacent lane is a way longer lasting deterrent.

    End rant

I can't believe the speed limit on the beach is 80k's. What sort of beaches do they have over there to do that sort of speed?

wide & firm ones, they get so much use the sand is quite firm!

Not that I agree with it but very heavy fines are the answer to speeding.

They would need to increase them to the point that you don't want to speed because the penalty outweighs the benefit of time saving...

If you had to fork out $1000 minimum if you were caught, and possibly more if you are a repeat offender then it would definitely deter you from doing it.

I can understand why they are doing it. Pedestrians can't really hear cars coming up behind them in the sand so getting them to slow down is a good idea, but yeah - IMO an overt visible deterrent makes people slow down, not the covert revenue generator.

Cops are hidden, people don't slow down so you can issue tickets. Sit out in the open, public sees you and slow down BUT you don't get to issue to tickets.. Hmmm.

If you have 15 minutes check this video out, it debunks most of the myths you'll hear - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BKdbxX1pDw#t=64

Personally I hate this "Speed kills" mantra. Most fatalities are caused by drunk/drugged drivers, not driving to the conditions, driver inattention (texting, falling asleep) or driving at excessive speed, not 5/10 over the limit. There's a single failure by the powers that be, to admit that the reduction in road toll is primarily to do with improved safety in cars rather than reductions in speeding via the use of fines. Why does most ticketing take place in low speed areas?

70% of Australian drivers admit to driving up to 10km/h over the limit (90% admit up to 5km/h over). There are about 17.6 million registered motor vehicles in Australia but only 1193 fatalities in 2013. (158 of these were pedestrians). So if 12.3 million drivers admit to speeding why do only 0.009% of the driving population meet with a fatality?

NZ gives an interesting case - they dropped their speeds to 80km following the oil crisis For the ten years that their maximum speed limit was only 80 kilometres per hour, an average of 3.75 people kiled per ten thousand cars on the road. For the ten years after that, when the speed limit increased to 100 kph, the average number of deaths dropped by 12%, to just 3.27 deaths per 10,000 vehicles

That's right. Covert camera doesn't stop the speeding driver rolling over or killing someone 100m down from the camera.

There's a lot of speeding and idiot driving that happens on the beaches here... I'm not against police enforcing it, and to be honest, I think they should have a much higher presence on the beaches... But not a hidden camera. That's just useless other than raising money. Display your colours, show your 4WD's marked with police all over them. Watch how quickly people slow down. If the 4WD's are driving up and down the beach, people are going to slow down.

If we can just get them to also stop the damn techno going til 3am....

I guess the 80 zone is not the biggest concern, but the 15klms of beach camping and the k or so around the Teewah township that are sign posted 50.

There is often a stream of 4wd's through the 50k zone doing at least 80 sometimes more.

But I do not understand why they went with the stealth aspect, one marked police 4wd on the beach all day would have an immediate impact.

Stealth cameras issue more tickets. Real live cops would be seen, hence people slow would down. Ergo you'd issue less tickets... Local pollies and cops can't then say how effective it was because it caught soo many people speeding. We should have more of them...

But its all about saftey. Yessir. And you'd be a fool and a communist to suggest otherwise.

                    How about this:
                    1. Have a police presence before the area where speeding is prevalent and provide visuals that speed cameras are in operation. This has an immediate effect for the safety of other beach users and provides a reminder to all drivers.
                    2. Have another marked car further along with a handheld and pull people over and give them a warning during a grace period. This reinforces the message.
                    3. After the grace period, replace the handheld with a covert camera and issue those heavy fines. This catches those who blatantly disregard the speed limit.

Check your state legislation. In WA, speeding infringements can only be given out for speeding on a "road", there is no legislation allowing the police to issue fines on the beach. Beaches belong to the relevant shire/city council and they are responsible for enforcing rules covering vehicular access and use.Cable Beach is 15km/hr limit.

Sunshine Coast beaches are gazetted roads. In this instance it's the Teewah-Freshwater Beach Rd which just happens to move up and down the sand according to the tide level.

Well then they deserve to be fined for breaching the limit. It only takes a few to stuff things for the majority and then one day you wake up to the news that the beaches are closed to vehicles forever.

I don't like the covert operation because it doesn't address the issue there and then but something needs to be done. Has been an issue for a long long time.
