    Runva EWX12000 Problem #2

So my Runva winch has experienced another issue. since I got it back from the first issue (Free spool) the clutch lever on the gearbox has been harder and harder to operate, requiring a mixture of running the winch motor, pulling on the cable and wiggling the lever all while standing on one leg, poking your tongue north.

So Overland 4wd (place of purchase) had a quick look while it was still fitted and confirmed an issue within the gearbox. A few emails later runva refused to ship a replacement gearbox out to swap it over. they said it must be removed and sent to Brisbane for assessment and repairs. if it was found to be water damage there would be a bill.

This is where I went into angry customer mode. I started emailing Runva directly quoting their original emails PRIOR to my purchase saying "Silicone the cables on the motor and the winch is waterproof and fully covered by warranty"

They did send the new gearbox out, I swapped it over and taking the old one back. looking at the old one I'm not even sure its water related, all the grease is still in good shape and not even discoloured

My Winch is currently around 18months old.

      Century Marine Pro 730 Problem

Over Christmas I noticed an issue with my dual battery / fridge. I had loaded the fridge up and left it 2 days on 240v to cool down. The afternoon before going away I loaded the prechilled fridge into the car so I was ready to go in the morning.

Upon getting into the car I noticed the fridge temp was quite high (12 degrees) then to find the second battery was completely flat.

As I have a couple of trips coming up I decided to investigate the issue. I found the battery was stuffed, it would loose 120+ah overnight with nothing running on it. Pulled out my receipt and found I was still in warranty (only by 2 weeks) took it in to my place of purchase, they battery tested it and it failed. removed and replaced on the spot with a new one from their stock.

      A++ for Century's warranty.
Bring on the cold beers for my next trip.

Landcruiser Mountain Park - Last Hurrah

I had planned easter's camping trip to be at LCMP but as the news broke earlier this year that LCMP had sold and the new owners had a different business plan for the park I had to scramble to organise a last trip. Scheduled it for the 26th till 28th of Feb (2nd last weekend open) and off we went.

As I've only been at the park in pretty mild company or none at all so I was determined to get some of the tougher tracks done and the top of that list was camp road. There is always a crowd gathered to watch at camp road so you really don't want to stuff things up.

With the rear locker engaged and an experienced co-pilot I decided to give it a go. In a Prado I would be surprised if this could be done without damage and no locker. had a few hairy moments but managed to get it up. squished the exhaust and popped the rear bumper out but that was it. (VIDEO COMING SOON)

The new ARB plates got a solid workout all weekend and have some bruises and bends to show from it.

In addition to camp road we managed to tick a couple of others off as completed also.

          Claw Gorge (Yellow)
          Frying Pan Road (Yellow)
          Old Hilux Hill (Red)
Club Rally Curcuit (Yellow and Red)
          Prado Parade (Yellow and Red)
          Tarago Trail (Yellow)
          Rav Ridge (Yellow)
The Sure Track (Yellow & Red) did all but the very last section that even the twin locked GU I was with had extreme difficulty doing.

          and a small momento

So during December 2015 I was lucky enough to win a $500 ARB gift card through 4WD TV.
So after having a long think about all the goodies available I settled on a set of ARB Bash Plates.

First a pic of the old. they have taken quite a beating and are well deformed.

after removing the front plate I noticed that the front mount for the rear plate was quite bent.

Old vs New (yes the middle plate is backwards in the picture)

all done and dusted, they do mount quite easily and extend alot further back compared to the factory ones.
nice work mte can i ask how much the bash plates set you back?

with Cruiser park shutdown we had to re-plan our easter get-away.
Manar Park it was. left on the Thursday and came home on Monday.

its a little further away (3.5 hrs vs 1.5 hrs) but our first impressions are pretty good.

                  LCMP vs Manar

                  Amenities
                  4/10 8/10

                  Camp Grounds
                  6/10 8/10

                  4wd Tracks
                  10/10 6/10

the swimming hole at the top end of manar park is 9/10. unfortunately we only got time to spend one day there but could see many hours spend on hot days.
We organized ourselves to have a bit if a feast with 8kg of Shoulder Pork slow cooked. It took us a couple of hours to get everything balanced and spinning nice. then had to lower it closer to the coals.

Creek Crossing on the way to the swimming hole.

we did about 1/2 the "Extreme" tracks at Manar park. and this was with the rain that came down on the Saturday and Sunday.
These compared roughly with LCMP Yellow tracks.

                    EGR Solution (Manual Mapper)

Well I have been umming and ahhhing for quite some time regarding the EGR system on the Prado. a little while ago I purchased a blanking plate with 6mm hole. been putting it off and recently found the Manual Mapper system from OzBush.

after some back and forth with OzBush about how it works I bit the bullet and have purchased the mapper and a full blank plate.
In most of the diesels that run EGR there is no problem with just blanking the EGR port.
you can even just modify the MAF output to keep the temp below 10°C and the ECU keeps the EGR port shut. However with the toyota's this does not work and when the egr operates the computer monitors the MAF for a change in temp. if it does not see the change it will throw error codes.

Quote from OzBush "Car computer commands EGR valve to open and waits for MAF sensor figure to change by -10% (depends on RPM) then it knows EGR gas is flowing.
Our mapper will simply read EGR valve position sensor signal and drops the MAF output according to the value of EGR valve.
So the car computer thinks everything is fine even if EGR pipe is fully blocked."

Once the unit arrives I'll get to work taking the EGR valve off, inspecting and cleaning. along with fitting the manual mapper and blanking plate.

                        Manual Mapper P2 - Installation

I won't bother writing a detailed "How To" guide as the documentation supplied and material already online make it a very easy process.

the hardest part of the install was by far the EGR blanking plate. I bought one from eBay (HERE).
after removing the 3 mounting bolts for the power steering fluid reservoir to tuck it out of the way it was clear the bolts are in the block so you need to cut notches in the blanking plate in order to slide it in.
using a dremel this took less than 2 mins.

Very little room to work. took me about 10-15 mins of 4 letter words to get it in. The smaller your hands the better. ask swmbo or small child to help.

I highly reccomend getting the 1KD-FTV harness in addition to the mapper. it means no soldering or cutting / splicing. it all simply plugs in-line with the EGR Valve to read its position.

the main unit just gets installed somewhere out of the way but easy to access. plugs in-line with the MAF

                        Initial Feedback:
better throttle response, feels more zippy (not a term used for diesel's very often.) more turbo whistle. I will report back on fuel economy in a little while. the mapper took all of about 20 mins to install (most of that was zipping the cables away neatly.)

                          just a small update,

Manual Mapper: having now done ~200 Liters of fuel through the system the economy is indistinguishable from stock.
this is with the mapper set to 0. quite happy with this mod and would recommend to anyone.

                            2nd Row 12v.

I decided to add a 12v and USB outlet behind the center console a little while ago. was just getting the time to get it done.

started with a small section of ally I then drilled and bent it into shape to fit in under the 2nd row air con controls.
the rear comes apart fairly easily so it was just finding a mounting position that worked.

the ally is pop riveted in place.

its all run through a 5mm, a fused relay and switch on the dash.

it all ends up quite neat and even room to hide charging leads on the sides.

                              Daddy got new shoes

for some time I have been keeping my eye out for a well priced set of 2014 Onward FJ Cruiser Mags
during my search I found it very popular to only replace 4 (as the way the rear tire cover attaches only a small number of after market rims will work)
ended up finding a set of 4 for a great price from a June 2016 FJ Cruiser that the dealer had remove and replace prior to delivery.

then found someone who was selling a set of 5 and agreed to part with just 1.
all in all means I now have a set of P15 offset mags to accommodate 285x70x17's
just need someone to by my 265's
