  • Just about to purchase new 150 series. Need advice

    Hello all,

After a couple of months of trying to decide which car to buy and coming very close to buying an 09 120 series v6 petrol Prado, we have finally decided to buy brand new. Have taken a 2014 150 Prado GXL 3 litre turbo diesel for a test drive and we quite like it. Very different from our sporty little zip around manual Subaru but that is to be expected. This will be our first 4x4 and it was a toss up between the Prado and the Nissan Patrol. Will be a family car around town car during the week and beach/camping/cruises on the weekends. I'm not great at negotiating prices and deals so I am unsure if we are getting a good buy here and as it's a lot of money, I wanted to ask others that have purchased new their opinions. For $61,990 we have a 2014 Auto GXL in Glacier White with tow bar, carpet mats, headlight and bonnet protectors and window tint. Is this a good deal or standard/full price? The accessories included are supposedly worth $1500. Any advice welcomed. Really hoping we have made the right choice in car now so I want to get the pricing right too. It hasn't been 100% finalised yet... I told them we wanted to go home and discuss finance figures before we proceed but I do have to get back to them tomorrow. Cheers,
    Amy

Seems about average pricing from the posts in the other buying thread, start about here :- http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post477203

Any pressing reason why you have to get back to them tomorrow?

      Hi Amy

Agree this seems about par with what others are paying. (When buying in December we paid a bit less but that was a novated lease so had fleet discount).

Probably reasonable but not a deal that you couldn't get other times, particularly close to end of the month when they're keen for sales.

I'm not great at negotiating either but did get some significantly different prices just asking several dealers for their best price with a set list of model, colour and accessories.

      Good luck!

        Hi Amy

Is that your drive away price or are there dealer delivery fees, etc, on top?

if there are other non-government fees offer half of what they are asking. Dealer delivery, etc., is often very negotiable.

If it is an all up price offer $61,000.00 flat and see how they react. If sack cloth and ashes hand them an Oscar statue. If they take you seriously and even meet you half way you are $500 better off.

Is it a local dealer they might be able to offer free loan car for major services (not just regular grease & oil change) and or free car wash when ever you drop it in - I have received both in the past and with a Prado free washes is a real benefit.

        Good luck

That is the first time that someone has recommended I buy a Petrol over a Diesel... I wanted to buy a Petrol 120 series originally and 9/10 people tried to talk me out of it - it worked. Of course the diesel wont go as hard as the petrol which does make me a bit sad as I drive a sporty little manual car now and like to get up it a bit but I think the resale of a diesel is going to be much better and I was hoping it would be a little more affordable to run than petrol/or more kms to a tank. Surely diesel is a better option?

agdavies, you sound like you've done your research and know what you want, stick with that. Try a quick search on carsales or cars guide, sort by cheapest first, there are a few GXL's around Brisbane around $60,000 drive away.

The diesel is cheaper to run, especially if you tow. The thing I find with my Prado is that I drive slower and it's more relaxed. It's a 4WD not a sports car and I love driving it. If you want sporty/fast/handling there are better options. For a capable, comfortable and reliable 4WD the Prado is a great choice and the diesel is a good match.

Have a look at some of the other threads http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-choice-please - Running close are about the same - while the diesel is cheaper on fuel, injector replacement around 100,000km+ mark is quite costly taking the economical benefit away from the diesel.

In my mind, it depends on how long your plan to have the car, how many km's you plan to do and whether you plan to tow - if you want the car long term, then I think Petrol is the better option as they have proven themselves to be more reliable than the diesels.

If you plan on trading the car within 5 years (or < 120,000km) or plan on towing (boat / caravan), then the diesel will be cheaper on fuel, hold its value better than the petrol and you will avoid costs in regards to injectors etc by trading in at around the 120 mark, therefore streets ahead.

Was planning on keeping the car for approx. 5 years. We do around 20,000-30,000 kms per year. Will be doing some light towing on weekends and we also have an old Holden than will need towing from time to time (need to check weight of that.. partner thinks it will be fine). The dealership mentioned other options with the vehicle today like the Fusion fabric/paint protection pack (interior, exterior and tint plus mats of my choice which are already included in my deal so not really an extra for me) for close to $2400 and electronic rust proofing and chemical spray underneath for $800 if purchased with the Fusion pack ($1400 without)... Are these extras worth it? I'm considering the rust proofing as the car will be taken onto the beach but really need some feedback on it. Also curious how many people take out the insurance with their loan in case of sudden illness, involuntary loss of employment and death? Another 2k there. All these things add up

They will try to sell you everything if your willing to spend. I took ours away with nothing, went around to the window tinting place and they were half the price, not only on tint but car care and rust protection. If you are only keeping the car for 5 years rust protection may not be worth it, I'd be unhappy if mine rusted in 5 years. I didn't get loan insurance but it may work for you.

Aaaargh..agree wholeheartedly with Scoota. They will try and sell you anything. Bought an i30 and the dealer tried to sell me all the extras and at a handsome price. Took it with nothing and got a tinter and detailer to so the same jobs for @1/2 the price esp paint protection!!! l do have it all around me so it does make it easier? Just giving you options. The dealers do not employ these peeps, they are subbed out, then they take their cut. I could get my 03 Prado rust protection resprayed at any time in the future. Take your time. Hope it goes well.

Extras are where they make their money, paint protection etc in particular. Avoid at all costs.

Also unless things have changed bear in mind that extras incur the luxury car tax if they are part of the purchase price. This was an issue when I did my tyre change-over at the dealer.

Standard sales tatic. Make the person feel the deal is time limited to pressure them into buying.

Agreed. Family friend bought a brand new pre-facelift 150 GXL and got seats reupholstered with leather cheaper aftermarket than Toyota were offering, and by his accounts better made too.

I had the same problem when I was trying to purchase a new vehicle.
My last car was a sports car (5 secs, 0-100km) and we needed a family car. Every time I spend bucket loads of cash I always do my research, locally or internationally. It has taken me a good 8-10 months to decide what vehicle to purchase. I will never look back and say @#!$... I should have bought that other vehicle. I purchased the very first new face look black manual Prado in Australia.
Their are too many dealers out there that will bend their backs to rip you off and try to give you everything for a price. At one point, I wasted close to 2k for paint protection which I found that I didn't really need.
My advice to you is buy the vehicle as is, haggle for a good price and free accessories and walk in with buckets loads of cash. Don't sign any paperwork until everything is in your favour. Auto and a diesel Prado has better re-sale value. Petrol drinks like theirs no tomorrow. Stick with aftermarket parts/accessories, Toyota genuine are overpriced and it looks ugly. Go to a civvy dealer and not a country dealer.
You will not regret buying an auto/diesel Prado.

How are you finding your Prado Black Mamba? Are you happy with your decision? We too have been researching and looking around for a few months. We think the Prado is the way to go as it will be a family vehicle and we want comfort and reliability as well as versatility. I really like driving manual but my partner drives a truck all day and wants the luxury of an auto. Will be sad to see my manual Subaru go! Are you happy with the manual? Did you test drive an auto? Did you find the manual drives better? I should probably take the manual Prado for a test drive and see how it drives compared to the auto. Do you have a bull bar on your Prado? We are looking around for a nice aftermarket one that suits the new shape and prefer something colour coded

On another note, can I also get some feedback on getting electronic rust proofing through the Toyota dealership. Is it worth doing and good quality as opposed to getting it done after market?
